JOB TITLE: RN Charge Nurse

RATE: $36.00 - $44.08 per hour Differentials

Status: Full-Time, Part-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

Is responsible for assessment, evaluation, planning, coordinating, and providing general nursing care for patients. The Charge Nurse coordinates continuity of patient care by communicating with patients, staff, physicians, and family members. The Charge Nurse is responsible for leading the nursing care team while providing direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, emergency room setting, or other areas as assigned. ​​

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Responsible for the effective delivery of nursing care that includes taking vital signs, administering prescribed medications and/or intravenous solutions and other medical procedures, providing or assisting with personal care and monitoring condition of patients and keeping other health care providers informed. All nursing care will be delivered in accordance with the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
• Responsible for maintaining and updating patient charts and records in a complete and timely manner in compliance with hospital policies and standards.
• Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective professional relations with patients, families, and caregivers.
• Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with other healthcare workers, area personnel and management.
• Responsible for ensuring the care of patients within the hospital by appropriate delegation and evaluation.
• Responsible for observing and following policy and procedure of the facility.
• Responsible for related duties as required or assigned by participating in continuing education programs, special projects and staying informed on trends and developments in the field of nursing.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality.
• Responsible for medication accountability/narcotic count each shift.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude to customer service.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Nursing degree from an accredited program, diploma from an accredited program, current unrestricted RN state license, current BLS and ACLS. ENPC and TNCC are encouraged to be obtained within the first 12 months of employment. Must have previous and relevant nursing experience in the emergency room. Must have acceptable KBI record check.

SKILLS:

Nursing skills in medical, surgical, intensive care; emergency room; understanding of safety precautions; infection control procedures for dealing with sharp instruments, needles, blood, and body fluids; understanding of the disease process and essential pharmacology; understanding of good body mechanics to avoid injury; excellent communication skills; ability to multi-task; strong problem solving abilities; ability to lead a team of licensed and unlicensed professionals, positive interpersonal skills and sensitivity; well organized; self-directed; able to coordinate well with others; able to use all related medical equipment, machines, monitors; computer applications.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May supervise RNs, LPNs, CMAs, CNAs, and ED Technicians.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Cardiac monitors, telemetry, thermometers, blood pressure and SA02 machines, CPM, compression devices, bed scales, chair scales, Sara lift, Hoyer lift, defibrillator, pacer, crash carts, phone, intercom, fax, shredder, copy machine, whirlpool, stretcher, suction machine, hospital beds, concentrator, maxi mist machine, crutches, splints, IV pumps, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform duties using proper body mechanics to avoid personal injury; be able to lift 40 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds regularly; to maneuver various equipment (weight 150 to 175#); be able to sit, stand, walk, reach, turn, and/or bend, push and pull as necessary to perform duties safely; may be required to use repetitive motion using wrists, hands and/or fingers; must be able to be on feet on concrete hallways for at least an 12-hour shift, to think clearly and manage a large amount of information quickly, prioritizing and handling patient, resident and/or staff concerns in order of importance; reasoning ability; mathematics ability; language ability for large quantity of reading, report preparation and communication. Can be a fast-paced environment, with stimuli from every direction, and must have ability to triage and manage all information effectively. Must speak English and communicate clearly; with at least average hearing and vision; must report factually and immediately in private to supervisor any incident or accident personally involved in or witnessed. Report all concerns related to Patient Rights, abuse/neglect/exploitation and/or confidentiality immediately and factually, demonstrate dependability by maintenance of optimum physical and emotional well-being, demonstrate tact, courtesy, and a pleasing manner, demonstrate effectual working relationships with co-workers, in a teamwork and helpful manner, willing to perform a variety of routine duties, willing to work with realization that errors in performance and judgment may have serious consequences. Must adhere to instructions issued by those in immediate authority; adhere to this facility’s dress code, infection control, safety and all related patient care policies and procedures, and be free of communicable diseases.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee works in an environment with biological, chemical and mechanical hazards. The employer will provide appropriate training, protective equipment and engineering controls for the protection and safety of the employee. As a condition of the employment the employee is required to abide by all risk management regulations including the proper use of protective devices and procedures.
