Job Description
EYL 365 Project is currently accepting applications for Culinary Art Youth Educators for the 2026 school year. We are seeking passionate and experienced Culinary Art Youth Educators with a strong interest in Social Justice and Racial Equity Arts Education. This position is for in school and/or after school residency opportunities, at our DCPS Ward 7 & 8 partner schools. Youth Educators must have demonstrated previous experience teaching Culinary Arts, ideally in Washington, DC Public School settings. Additional experience with entrepreneurship, marketing and branding is also a plus!
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Visually assess students to determine their level of practice.
- Provides a holding space for presence, reflection and connection with self and others to occur with the students
- Maintain and follow proper hygiene and sanitation standards.
- Creating Culinary Art lesson plans, materials, and activities for students middle school through high school
- Expedite and delegate kitchen tasks to students to ensure dishes are prepared within allot class time while teaching basic culinary skills
- Teaching students how to apply cooking techniques to everyday life situations
- Teaching students about supplies, pricing, menu planning, safety, and sanitation issues that arise in the restaurant business.
- Responsible for teaching students about culinary terminology, food cuisines, meat, fish and poultry fabrication and general food knowledge.
- Providing individualized instruction to students who have special needs or are interested in specific topics such as stress management, anxiety relief, or recovery from substance abuse
- Motivate students with words of encouragement.
- Connect with students during the yoga classes through fun, intelligent sequencing.
- Engage in administrative duties.
- Youth-centered workshops focus on their education and skill attainment; adult educator workshops teach youth-serving professionals who want to utilize Culinary Art to support their curricula creation and facilitation
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, Bachelor's Degree in Culinary Arts, or at least three years experience in the restaurant or food service industries.
- CPR/First Aid certification.

- The talent to encourage connections between Culinary Art problem-solving with real-life problem-solving
- Conduct interactive, friendly, and fun classes with 10-15 kids
- The sincere drive to be a positive role model and promote good sportsmanship
- Ability to promote a feeling of security and trust in children by being warm, supportive, and comforting.
- Are enthusiastic and passionate about working with young children.
- Ability to commute to contracted locations.
- Able to effectively collaborate with other teaching staff (when necessary)
- Ability to work well in an inner-city environment.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
- Minimum of three years Culinary Art teaching experience.
- Advanced experience (2-5 years of experience) facilitating/teaching middle and/or high school school-aged youth, working with racially and ethnically diverse and
- Holds high expectations for each student and works to foster student achievement through building individual relationships
- Enthusiasm and passion for mentoring others and making change in communities
- Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, staff, parents, young people, volunteers, and community groups
- Fluency in multiple student-centered instructional approaches
- Commitment to student life
- Proven dedication to professional growth and purpose-driven practice
- Professional practice and ability to model contemplation as part of intellectual exploration
Instruction:
- Providing instruction in the arts (development of skills in arts disciplines consistent with EYL 365 Project Blueprint) and through the arts (the achievement of academic goals as outlined in a school’s curriculum) by:
- Teaching and planning for 2 in-schools per week and/or possibly as many as 4 after schools per week;
- Developing long term project-based unit designs in collaboration with classroom teachers;
- Assessing student learning based on learning goals and objectives;
- Organizing at least 2 sharings of student work with teaching partners and TA colleagues at the school.
- Working in close collaboration with classroom teacher partners to:
- Plan lessons and projects during one in person 45-minute planning session per week (and via email and phone as well, when necessary);
- Share skills with the teacher to build capacity for arts instruction at the school;
- Co-teach lessons in which both TA and teacher partner have clear roles and responsibilities for generating student learning;
- Coordinate at least one trip to a DC cultural institution and/or one guest artist per class with a connection to learning in the classroom.
*A note: After schools are typically not co-taught with classroom teachers but are designed in collaboration with the school administration.
In addition to teaching and planning obligations, EYL 365 Project Youth Educators are expected to contribute to the life of the EYL 365 Project community and the development of the larger arts education field by:
Documentation:
- Complete Curriculum maps and student rosters and document all project plans using EYL 365 Project templates and planning tools;
- Collecting portfolios of student work for each class through photos, videos, and class artifacts.
EYL 365 Project Youth Educators are highly skilled artists and educators, committed to creating equitable learning spaces through collaborative teaching practices and social justice pedagogy. They report directly to the Program Director and are supported by EYL 365 Project Department Heads and Program Coordinators. They work closely with classroom teachers, school administrators, and teaching artists to positively impact school communities.

Pay: $40.00 - $60.00 per hour
