Duties
- Conduct thorough eye examinations using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to assess visual acuity, eye health, and ocular function.
- Diagnose and treat a wide range of eye conditions, including refractive errors, glaucoma, cataracts, and pediatric ocular issues.
- Prescribe corrective lenses such as glasses and contact lenses including specialty contact lenses and scleral lenses tailored to each patient’s needs.
- Utilize electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) systems to document patient histories, examination findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans accurately.
- Educate patients on eye health maintenance, preventive care strategies, and proper use of prescribed eyewear or medications.
- Collaborate with ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals for complex cases requiring specialized intervention.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality and data security.
- Perform vital signs assessments when necessary to support comprehensive patient evaluations.
- Follow aseptic techniques during examinations and procedures to prevent infections and ensure patient safety.
- Keep detailed medical records including medical coding for billing purposes while adhering to all regulatory standards.
- Provide excellent customer service by addressing patient concerns with empathy and professionalism, ensuring a positive experience from start to finish.
- Assist in optical sales by recommending appropriate eyewear solutions based on individual needs and preferences.
Requirements
- Valid licensure as an Optometrist in Louisiana with current certification to practice medicine in the field of optometry.
- Strong knowledge of ophthalmology principles, anatomy, physiology of the eye, and medical terminology related to eye care.
- Experience working with optical equipment, diagnostic instruments, EMR/EHR systems, and medical records management.
- Familiarity with pediatric eye care practices to effectively serve patients across all age groups.
- Ability to perform comprehensive eye exams while demonstrating excellent attention to detail and precision.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations ensuring confidentiality in handling patient information.
- Competence in medical coding for billing purposes aligned with insurance requirements.
- Excellent communication skills for educating patients clearly about their conditions and treatment options.
- Customer service orientation with a proactive approach to addressing patient needs and inquiries.
