Job Title:
Ophthalmic Technician
Job Summary:
An Ophthalmic Technician assists ophthalmologists by performing clinical duties to ensure efficient and high-quality eye care. Responsibilities include conducting diagnostic tests, collecting patient histories, preparing patients for examination, and assisting with minor procedures. The technician plays a vital role in patient care and clinic flow.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take detailed patient histories, including vision problems, medical conditions, medications, and allergies
- Measure and record visual acuity (with and without glasses or contact lenses)
- Perform diagnostic tests such as:
- Tonometry (intraocular pressure measurement)
- Visual field testing
- Fundus photography
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
- A-scan and B-scan ultrasonography
- Administer eye drops as directed by the ophthalmologist
- Assist during minor in-office procedures (e.g., injections, laser treatments)
- Maintain and sterilize instruments and examination rooms
- Manage patient flow and support daily clinic operations
- Document exam findings and test results in the electronic health record (EHR)
- Educate patients on treatment plans, medication usage, and follow-up instructions
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Two years of experience required
- Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred
- Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry clinic preferred
- Strong understanding of ocular anatomy, diseases, and terminology
- Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and EHR systems
- Excellent communication and patient service skills
- Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
Work Environment:
- Outpatient clinical setting
- May require standing or walking for extended periods
- May require travel between multiple locations
- Occasional evening or weekend shifts, depending on clinic hours
