Job Title:

Ophthalmic Technician

Job Summary:

An Ophthalmic Technician assists ophthalmologists by performing clinical duties to ensure efficient and high-quality eye care. Responsibilities include conducting diagnostic tests, collecting patient histories, preparing patients for examination, and assisting with minor procedures. The technician plays a vital role in patient care and clinic flow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take detailed patient histories, including vision problems, medical conditions, medications, and allergies
  • Measure and record visual acuity (with and without glasses or contact lenses)
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as:
  • Tonometry (intraocular pressure measurement)
  • Visual field testing
  • Fundus photography
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • A-scan and B-scan ultrasonography
  • Administer eye drops as directed by the ophthalmologist
  • Assist during minor in-office procedures (e.g., injections, laser treatments)
  • Maintain and sterilize instruments and examination rooms
  • Manage patient flow and support daily clinic operations
  • Document exam findings and test results in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Educate patients on treatment plans, medication usage, and follow-up instructions

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Two years of experience required
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry clinic preferred
  • Strong understanding of ocular anatomy, diseases, and terminology
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and EHR systems
  • Excellent communication and patient service skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:

  • Outpatient clinical setting
  • May require standing or walking for extended periods
  • May require travel between multiple locations
  • Occasional evening or weekend shifts, depending on clinic hours

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour
