About Baytown

Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.
Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.
The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.

What role you will play
As a coating specialist you will provide technical knowledge on coatings, insulation and fireproofing and application of these materials to directly support the Baytown Area. This position provides key communication functions between Engineering Service teams and other organizations.
What you will do
Provide Baytown Area support for specifications of paint and protective coatings, insulation, and fireproofing organizations including maintenance, turnarounds, and projects- Review site specific paint and protective coatings, insulation and fireproofing specifications and applications.
- Review vendor ITP’s, ensure proper hold points are identified and completed, assess and review deviations from coating specifications or ITP’s with a focus on cost and reliability of the resulting coating system.
- Maintain an active role in implementing changes/updates to site practices for paint and protective coatings, insulation and fireproofing.
- Oversee Quality Assurance duties and responsibilities for coatings, insulation and fireproofing inspections.
- Serve as site point-of-contact for inter-company coatings, insulation and fireproofing technology sharing.
- Coordinate and develop paint and protective coating, insulation and fireproofing systems, processes, and procedures based on relevant industry best-practices.
- Provide technology assessment for new and current practices including coating selection requirements while balancing quality and cost considerations.
- Maintain knowledge of relevant national standards, requirements, and interpretations.
- Support for special coating inspection programs.
- Serve as site point of contact for paint and protective coatings selection for Inspection Best Practices/Systems.
- Recognize and gather relevant information needed for a polymeric or composite failure investigation.
- Develop coating specifications for area projects. Work with vendors and third-party engineering resources to ensure competitive coating selection.
About you
Skills and Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of Coating inspection with NACE Level III experience in a Refinery or Petrochemical facility- Candidates must be certified to a minimum of NACE Level III
- Must have strong working knowledge of API 510/570/653
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
Working knowledge of corrosion mechanisms and metallurgy found in Refinery / Petrochemical Plants- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (email, meeting / team discussion, report writing)
- Experienced with utilizing computerized inspection databases for inspection record keeping purposes
- Capable of utilizing piping isometric drawings, P&IDs, and vessel drawings
- Demonstrated ability to both identify and solve problems
- Recognized by colleagues as an expert in polymers and composites
- Expert knowledge of structure-properties-processing relationship for thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers and fiber-reinforced composites
- Expert knowledge of polymer and composite manufacturing and fabrication and/or joining practices
- Knowledgeable in polymer or composite supplier’s/contractor’s industry trends and individual capabilities
- Understands Life-Cycle-Cost-Analysis for polymers and composites.
- Understands failure modes and/or degradation mechanisms for polymers and composites.
- Understands the capabilities with inspection and NDE methods commonly applied (e.g., UT, RT, PMI, Spectroscopy techniques) for integrity management for polymer or composite materials.
- Knowledgeable of polymer characterization techniques such as DSC, TGA, FTIR, SEM or computational modeling.
