Job Title: IT Manager – AI & Transportation Systems


Position Summary

The IT Manager for AI & Transportation is responsible for leading the planning, implementation, and support of technology solutions that enhance transportation operations through data-driven insights and artificial intelligence. This role oversees IT infrastructure, application management, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies while working closely with operations, engineering, and leadership teams to modernize transportation systems.


Key Responsibilities

1. Technology Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and execute the IT roadmap aligned with organizational goals, with a strong focus on AI-driven optimization and digital transformation.
  • Identify opportunities to incorporate machine learning, predictive analytics, and automation into transportation workflows (fleet management, routing, maintenance, scheduling, logistics, etc.).
  • Lead vendor evaluations, RFPs, and technology implementation for transportation management systems (TMS), fleet telematics, ELD, AVL, IoT sensors, and dispatch software.

2. Systems & Infrastructure Management

  • Manage the architecture, deployment, and maintenance of IT systems, networks, cloud platforms, and data infrastructure supporting transportation operations.
  • Ensure high availability and performance of critical applications such as routing engines, onboard systems, and real-time tracking platforms.

3. AI, Data, and Analytics

  • Lead development and deployment of AI models for predictive maintenance, route optimization, demand forecasting, safety analytics, and operational efficiency.
  • Oversee data governance, data quality, and the creation of centralized data pipelines and dashboards.
  • Partner with data scientists and engineers to operationalize AI solutions and ensure they integrate effectively into day-to-day transportation systems.

4. Cybersecurity & Compliance

  • Ensure cybersecurity best practices across IT and operational technology (OT) environments, including onboard systems and IoT devices.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant regulations (DOT, FMCSA, NIST, GDPR, ISO standards, or regional transportation security requirements).
  • Manage risk assessments, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity initiatives.

5. Team & Stakeholder Management

  • Supervise IT staff, providing mentorship, performance management, and skills development.
  • Collaborate with operations, dispatch, maintenance, HR, finance, and executive leadership to understand business needs and deliver effective technology solutions.
  • Manage IT budgets, procurement, and vendor relationships.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 5–10 years of IT management experience, including leading technical teams.
  • Proven experience in transportation, logistics, public transit, or mobility systems.
  • Experience implementing or managing AI, machine learning, or data analytics solutions.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Familiarity with TMS, ELD/telematics, GPS/AVL, route optimization platforms, or maintenance systems.
  • Understanding of data engineering, APIs, system integrations, and microservices.
  • Proficiency with cybersecurity frameworks and IT best practices (ITIL, NIST, ISO 27001).
  • Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases, BI tools, and ML platforms (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Azure ML).

Soft Skills

  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and project-management capabilities.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into business language.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.


Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge of AI-enabled predictive maintenance or advanced fleet analytics.
  • Background in Transportation Industry-- Asset and non asset.
