Mechanical Engineer I
Location: Norfolk, VA
Reports To: Project Manager
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer I supports contract requirements by assisting with the planning, design, analysis, documentation, and coordination of mechanical systems and related engineering tasks. This entry-level position works under close supervision and contributes to engineering efforts that support mission requirements, system reliability, code compliance, and project execution. The role may include field support, technical documentation, problem-solving, and coordination with project personnel, government representatives, and subcontractors.
Essential Duties
- Assist in the design, review, and development of mechanical systems, equipment, and related components.
- Prepare engineering drawings, sketches, calculations, technical notes, and documentation.
- Support inspections, troubleshooting, and field assessments of mechanical systems and equipment.
- Review technical submittals, specifications, and project documents for accuracy and compliance.
- Assist with the preparation of reports, schedules, cost estimates, and material takeoffs as needed.
- Coordinate with internal team members, vendors, subcontractors, and client representatives.
- Support maintenance, installation, repair, or upgrade efforts for mechanical systems.
- Assist in identifying deficiencies, recommending corrective actions, and tracking resolution.
- Ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and contract specifications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support contract performance.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 0–2 years of related engineering experience, internships, or equivalent practical experience.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, systems, and calculations.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and engineering software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, or similar tools, if applicable.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow direction from senior engineers or supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting government, industrial, facilities, or construction contracts.
- Familiarity with mechanical systems such as HVAC, piping, pumps, compressors, plumbing, or related equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements.
- Experience with field investigations, technical reports, or as-built documentation.
- EIT certification or ability to obtain it, if required by the contract.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in office and field environments.
- May require periodic standing, walking, bending, climbing, or lifting of light to moderate equipment or materials.
- Ability to access job sites, mechanical rooms, rooftops, or other operational areas as required.
Work Environment
This position may involve both desk-based engineering tasks and site visits in active operational environments. The employee must be able to adapt to changing priorities, meet deadlines, and support contract deliverables in a professional manner.
