A day in this roleStep into a shop where no two parts are alike. As a senior specialist on large horizontal CNC mills, you will plan, set up, and run unique, low-volume projects from start to finish. This is not high-volume, fixture-based work — each assignment demands your judgment, careful setup, and precise execution. You will independently engineer how to hold challenging workpieces, including 3-point setups, ensuring every part is secured in a relaxed state before the first chip falls.What you'll handleSet up, operate, and maintain large horizontal CNC mills for one-off and short-run jobs.Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and job travelers to plan machining strategies.Program, edit, and adjust CNC code to meet specific job requirements.Independently select tooling and establish workholding for non-fixtured and irregular parts, including 3-point setups.Validate features and tolerances using precision instruments such as ID/OD micrometers and calipers.Keep the work area organized, clean, and safe at all times.Perform preventive maintenance and minor troubleshooting on assigned CNC machines.Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and teammates to meet production goals and quality standards.What you bringProven experience running large horizontal CNC mills with complex, non-repeat setups.Ability to independently determine and execute setups without dedicated fixtures.Hands-on experience with 3-point setups and securing heavy, large parts in a relaxed state.Familiarity with Fanuc controls, specifically older 18M and newer 30iB systems.Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.Competency with precision measuring tools (ID/OD micrometers, calipers).Knowledge of machining fundamentals: speeds, feeds, and material behaviors.Basic mechanical troubleshooting for CNC equipment.Work environment and physical demandsStand for extended periods while operating machines.Climb, balance, stoop, and walk as you safely navigate large machinery and shop areas.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times while in the plant and yard.About Express Employment ProfessionalsExpress Employment Professionals is among the leading staffing firms in the U.S. and Canada.
