Overview
An Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports individuals with physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities to live independently and participate fully in their communities. This role is a perfect starting point for those looking to enter the healthcare or social services field. We balance hands-on caregiving with advocacy and life-skills coaching.
No prior experience is necessary. To ensure the highest quality of care, we provide comprehensive training and access to CPR/First Aid certification to all entry-level staff before they are sent on their first assignment.
In a group home, day program, or residential facility setting, you will create a family-like atmosphere while promoting independence and ensuring a safe, supportive environment. Applicants new to the field will undergo a mandatory orientation and hands-on skills training period prior to beginning their first shift.
Group Home Responsibilities
Daily Living & Hygiene: Provide hands-on assistance or supervision with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
Skill Building: Encourage self-help skills and implement goals outlined in each resident's Individual Support Plan (ISP) to increase their independence.
Household Management: Perform light housekeeping, laundry, and general upkeep. Plan and prepare well-balanced meals following specific dietary instructions.
Advocacy: Ensure residents' rights are respected and help them find their "voice" to make their own life choices.
Health & Medication: Monitor residents for health changes and document findings in medical logs or Medication Administration Records (MAR).
Community Support: Accompany residents to medical appointments, social outings, and grocery shopping. Facilitate community engagement.
Behavioral Support: Provide support to resident Behavior Support Plans (BSP). Provide crisis intervention and use positive redirection for behavioral challenges.
Compliance & Documentation: Maintain accurate communication logs, incident reports, and progress notes.
Requirements & Qualifications
Experience: None required; we provide all necessary entry-level training.
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Legal: Must be 18 years old, pass a comprehensive criminal background check for working in healthcare, and have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Certifications: Current CPR and First Aid certifications (American Heart Association or Red Cross). Classes are available if you are not yet certified.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift 30–75 lbs, stand for long periods, and perform repetitive movements like bending or reaching.
Key Skills: Strong empathy, patience, de-escalation skills, and basic computer literacy for electronic documentation.
Work Schedule
Group homes & day programs require 24/7 coverage across multiple shifts:
Day and Evening: Supporting active routines and outings.
Overnight: Often requires staff to remain awake and alert to assist with nighttime needs.
Rotating Weekends/Holidays: Essential for facility operations.
Pay: From $15.00 per hour
