We’re seeking an Engineering Technician support the design, planning, and execution of electric utility projects in Davenport, IA . In this role, you’ll help ensure electric transmission and distribution work orders are accurately designed, properly constructed, and fully documented—supporting safe, reliable service for residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
You’ll collaborate with engineering staff, electricians, contractors, and customers while balancing office-based design work with hands-on field inspections.
Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and prepare work orders for construction, maintenance, and modification of electric transmission and distribution systems
- Review work orders for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with utility standards
- Conduct field visits to gather data, stake routes, and inspect work in progress
- Ensure completed work is accurately reflected in drawings, GIS maps, and maintenance systems
- Assist in scheduling and coordinating transmission and distribution projects; serve as project lead when assigned
- Develop line designs and cost estimates for maintenance and small capital projects (Level II)
- Work with customers and contractors on job sales, including cost estimates, material lists, and drawings
- Monitor construction activities and approve customer billings
- Respond to customer questions or concerns and communicate utility policies
- Support preventive maintenance programs and generate corrective work orders as needed
- Collaborate with electricians, residential customers, and commercial customers on electrical and lighting service design
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Engineering Technician I: Entry-level; utility experience preferred
- Experience with electric transmission and distribution systems strongly preferred
- Familiarity with overhead and underground electrical systems and utility equipment
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NESC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA)
- Valid driver’s license and ability to perform field work in all weather conditions
Preferred Skills
- Experience using GIS software (Esri ArcGIS preferred) – required for Level II
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and technical documentation
- Solid problem-solving and organizational skills
- Project management experience (required for Level II, preferred for Level I)
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Comfort working around high-voltage environments
