Senior to Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Position Overview
Express Employment Professionals is helping recruit for a Senior to Principal Geotechnical Engineer to support and grow geotechnical operations in Montana and the broader western United States. This leadership role involves managing projects, mentoring staff, and contributing to business development while delivering high-quality geotechnical engineering services.
You’ll work on diverse and technically challenging projects across Montana and the Rocky Mountain region, including infrastructure, environmental hazards, mining, and oil and gas.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage geotechnical projects through all phases, from investigation to design and construction
- Provide technical leadership to support growth of the geotechnical practice in Montana
- Conduct geotechnical analyses and prepare engineering reports
- Perform field investigations, quality control inspection, and construction oversight
- Design solutions for:
- Soil and rock slope stability
- Foundations (shallow and deep)
- Transportation infrastructure (bridges, highways)
- Geologic hazards and mitigation
- Waste containment systems
- HDD design and pavement systems
- Support and expand client relationships and regional business development
- Collaborate with senior leadership to improve technical and business outcomes
- Ensure compliance with company health and safety standards
Qualifications
- Experience: 10–20 years in geotechnical engineering
- Strong track record of project delivery and client satisfaction
- Experience in:
- Civil, environmental, or geotechnical engineering
- Hydrology/hydraulics, mining, or geohazard projects (preferred)
- Proficiency in:
- Geotechnical design analysis and software
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Experience preparing engineering plans and specifications
- Familiarity with geotechnical lab and construction materials testing
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable working directly with clients
Education
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical/Materials emphasis)
- OR
- Geological Engineering or related field
Certifications & Licenses
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required (Montana or ability to obtain)
- PG license (preferred)
- HAZWOPER and MSHA certifications (preferred)
Work Schedule & Conditions
- Schedule: 40 hours per week (day shift)
- Travel: Up to 50% (primarily within Montana and Rocky Mountain region)
- Must be able to:
- Lift moderate loads
- Walk/hike in mountainous terrain
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Occasionally work extended hours
