The Director of Finance will serve as the organization’s top financial leader, overseeing all financial operations, guiding long-term strategy, and ensuring responsible stewardship of resources. This role works closely with executive leadership and the governing board while leading a team of finance professionals.
This opportunity is ideal for a CPA or senior finance leader with government or nonprofit experience who is passionate about making a meaningful community impact.

What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)
- Build strong, trusted relationships with executive leadership and the board
- Assess and enhance finance team structure and professional development
- Strengthen internal controls and improve financial reporting systems
- Lead the organization successfully through the annual audit cycle
- Develop long-range financial forecasting and scenario planning models
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Operations
- Oversee all financial operations including accounting, payroll, procurement, AP/AR, and cash flow
- Ensure accurate, timely reporting in accordance with GAAP and fund accounting standards
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls
- Manage banking relationships, reserves, and debt strategy
Strategic Planning & Financial Analysis
- Act as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on financial sustainability
- Build financial models to support informed decision-making
- Present complex financial data clearly to leadership, board members, and stakeholders
- Monitor economic and regulatory trends
Budgeting, Forecasting & Performance
- Lead organization-wide budgeting processes
- Conduct budget-to-actual analysis and reporting
- Develop multi-year forecasts and financial scenarios
- Evaluate performance across programs and initiatives
Audit, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Manage annual audit process and external auditor relationships
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Oversee financial reporting requirements and regulatory submissions
- Maintain relationships with lenders and oversight agencies
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance professionals
- Establish clear goals and performance expectations
- Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
- Align team structure with organizational growth
Board Relations & External Engagement
- Present financial reports and recommendations to the board
- Support governance and financial oversight functions
- Represent the organization with external stakeholders
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement process improvements
- Ensure transparency, efficiency, and accuracy in financial systems
- Support financial planning for development projects and funding opportunities
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5 years of progressive financial leadership experience
- Strong expertise in government or nonprofit finance and fund accounting
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, and financial reporting
- Experience managing audits and compliance requirements
- Proven leadership and team development experience
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
Preferred
- CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential
- Experience with federal funding regulations and compliance
- Knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance
- Background in housing, community development, or public-sector finance
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Yardi, ADP)
- Experience working with or presenting to a governing board
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $115,000 – $128,000 DOE
