Director of Finance (CFO-Equivalent)

Full-Time | $115,000 – $128,000/year


About the Opportunity

Express Employment Professionals is assisting a respected, mission-driven organization in recruiting a Director of Finance (CFO-equivalent). This is a high-impact leadership role ideal for a strategic financial professional who thrives in environments requiring strong compliance, operational excellence, and purpose-driven work.

The Director of Finance will serve as the organization’s top financial leader, overseeing all financial operations, guiding long-term strategy, and ensuring responsible stewardship of resources. This role works closely with executive leadership and the governing board while leading a team of finance professionals.

This opportunity is ideal for a CPA or senior finance leader with government or nonprofit experience who is passionate about making a meaningful community impact.

What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)

  1. Build strong, trusted relationships with executive leadership and the board
  2. Assess and enhance finance team structure and professional development
  3. Strengthen internal controls and improve financial reporting systems
  4. Lead the organization successfully through the annual audit cycle
  5. Develop long-range financial forecasting and scenario planning models


Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Operations

  1. Oversee all financial operations including accounting, payroll, procurement, AP/AR, and cash flow
  2. Ensure accurate, timely reporting in accordance with GAAP and fund accounting standards
  3. Implement and maintain strong internal controls
  4. Manage banking relationships, reserves, and debt strategy

Strategic Planning & Financial Analysis

  1. Act as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on financial sustainability
  2. Build financial models to support informed decision-making
  3. Present complex financial data clearly to leadership, board members, and stakeholders
  4. Monitor economic and regulatory trends

Budgeting, Forecasting & Performance

  1. Lead organization-wide budgeting processes
  2. Conduct budget-to-actual analysis and reporting
  3. Develop multi-year forecasts and financial scenarios
  4. Evaluate performance across programs and initiatives

Audit, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  1. Manage annual audit process and external auditor relationships
  2. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  3. Oversee financial reporting requirements and regulatory submissions
  4. Maintain relationships with lenders and oversight agencies

Leadership & Team Development

  1. Lead, mentor, and develop a team of finance professionals
  2. Establish clear goals and performance expectations
  3. Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  4. Align team structure with organizational growth

Board Relations & External Engagement

  1. Present financial reports and recommendations to the board
  2. Support governance and financial oversight functions
  3. Represent the organization with external stakeholders

Continuous Improvement

  1. Identify and implement process improvements
  2. Ensure transparency, efficiency, and accuracy in financial systems
  3. Support financial planning for development projects and funding opportunities


Qualifications

Required

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  2. 5 years of progressive financial leadership experience
  3. Strong expertise in government or nonprofit finance and fund accounting
  4. In-depth knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, and financial reporting
  5. Experience managing audits and compliance requirements
  6. Proven leadership and team development experience
  7. Excellent communication and presentation skills

Preferred

  1. CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential
  2. Experience with federal funding regulations and compliance
  3. Knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance
  4. Background in housing, community development, or public-sector finance
  5. Experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Yardi, ADP)
  6. Experience working with or presenting to a governing board


Compensation & Benefits

  1. Salary: $115,000 – $128,000 DOE
