Position Summary
The Building Substitute Teacher plays a vital role in ensuring continuity of instruction and student learning by providing high-quality classroom coverage across all grade levels and content areas. Working closely with the academic team, the substitute supports daily instruction, maintains established routines, and fosters a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment. This full-time, school-based position provides the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the school community while gaining diverse classroom experience.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Provide instructional coverage for absent teachers in grades K–6
Follow lesson plans provided by classroom teachers, adapting as needed to ensure lesson objectives are met
Create a positive and supportive classroom culture aligned with the school’s norms and expectations
Establish and maintain classroom routines that promote student engagement and productivity
Maintain accurate records of student behavior, attendance, and instructional activities
Support small group instruction and differentiated learning when assigned to co-teach or assist
Step into instructional or non-instructional roles as needed, including specials, lunch duty, arrival/dismissal, and recess
Communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff, and school leaders
Uphold school-wide behavioral expectations and utilize restorative practices as appropriate
Be flexible, adaptable, and ready to support instructional staff on short notice
Participate in professional development sessions and contribute to a positive school culture
Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong classroom management skills and ability to engage students across multiple grade levels
Understanding of child development and effective instructional practices
Familiarity with New York State Learning Standards and classroom technology
Ability to build rapport quickly with students and staff
Reliable, punctual, and organized
Flexible and solution-oriented mindset
Willingness to receive feedback and grow professionally
Qualifications Profile
Fingerprint clearance from NYS Department of Education
Ability to work flexible hours for parent-teacher conferences, family events, and school activities
Proficiency in using standard classroom technology, including interactive whiteboards, laptops, and digital platforms
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field preferred
Associate’s Degree with relevant experience considered
Certification
New York State Teaching Certification (or working toward certification) preferred
Experience
Experience working with children in a classroom
Prior substitute teaching or classroom experience in an urban school environment strongly preferred
Experience with project-based or inquiry-based instruction is strongly desired
Experience working with diverse student populations and implementing CRSE strategies
