This job is a TECHNICAL DIRECTOR FOR LIVE THEATER.

Summary

The Technical Director is the primary resource for technical aspects of productions at hand and also acts as a facilities manager for ETP. The Technical Director interprets designs, oversees construction, and maintains the technical operation of the theater’s set, lights, sound, and props. The Technical Director also works with the production’s director and other members of the creative team to ensure that the technical requirements of any production are met. While a production is not active, the Technical Director may perform facilities maintenance or improvement tasks, as needed, and may assist with rentals and inventory.

General Duties

  • Establish and maintain dialogue between ETP production staff and creative teams with the goal of delivering a high-quality product while maximizing budget and labor resources
  • Maintain the flow of information and communication of design needs.
  • Prepare scenic budgets, estimates, track expenses (materials and labor), and implement ETP contractor policies and processes
  • Coordinate rentals, as needed
  • Oversee creation, implementation, tracking, and expenditures of scenic, props, and paint budgets for all productions.
  • Track production spending and/or reallocation for scenic, paint, and props.
  • Create, communicate, and ensure implementation of production calendars to include space and use needs.
  • Create and distribute a Build Plan that includes a Load-In and Tech schedule for all productions detailing all build events, from Load-In to Opening night
  • Assist with facility rental site visits and ETP special events (example: Gala) scheduling, setup, and production personnel as needed
  • Create drafts and distribute build drawings to scenic staff for all constructed elements, as needed
  • Determine the necessary technical support in collaboration with other production departments, including lighting, sound, stage management, and all needs necessary for production in advance of production dates
  • Follow and enforce ETP’s safety policy at all times
  • Meet all deadlines for production as set by production manager and/or managing director
  • Acting as the last line of defense for technical problems
  • Monitor the condition of equipment and technical assets of the theatre including storage and stage equipment, and arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment from time to time
  • Advise production manager, managing director, and/or employees on feasibility, cost, and equipment capabilities
  • Submit Crew payroll in a timely manner to meet payroll deadlines
  • Keep accurate records and receipts of expenses
  • Managing the facility itself, such as taking out the trash, making sure the lights are off, security system is armed, and performing minor repairs
  • Acting as second-in-command for security matters concerning the facility

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in theater, technical theater, or a related field
  • 2 years of experience in live theater technical work or equivalent
  • Strong technical skills in set design, construction, electrical wiring, and, to a lesser extent, lighting and sound equipment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to delegate tasks and estimate personnel required to complete tasks on time
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Strong Technical and Design experience
  • Excellent time management, organization, and administrative skills
  • Ability to read and navigate technical and build drawings
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Desire to work hard and support the arts.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift and move items weighing 50 pounds
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as lifting, bending, and climbing ladders
  • Ability to work from heights up to 20’ (i.e., ladders, loading bridge, and personnel lifts)
  • Available to work nights and weekends, workdays could include long periods of time either sitting or standing

Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
