We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Entry-Level Laboratory Technician to join our small team specializing in DNA testing for avian species. This position is ideal for someone with a strong interest in genetics, molecular biology, and animal science who enjoys hands-on laboratory work and occasional animal care. Training will be provided, but a basic understanding of molecular lab techniques is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Duties:
- Prepare and process biological samples (e.g., feathers, blood, tissue) for DNA extraction.
- Set up and run PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) assays to amplify DNA samples.
- Perform gel electrophoresis for DNA visualization and quality assessment.
- Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and sample logs.
- Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring a clean, organized work environment.
- Follow all safety protocols and quality control procedures.
Animal Care Duties:
- Provide routine care for birds used in sampling and observation (feeding, watering, cage maintenance).
- Assist with safe and humane handling of birds for sample collection under supervision.
Qualifications
Required:
- Basic understanding of molecular biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written protocols.
- Good organizational and communication skills.
- Willingness to handle animals and biological materials.
Preferred:
- Previous laboratory or animal care experience (including internships or coursework).
- Familiarity with pipetting, sample labeling, and data entry.
- Comfort working in a small, collaborative team environment.
Working Conditions
