What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Assistant (part-time) position at Exeter Public Library?
Under the supervision of the Library Director, this part-time position is responsible for delivering borrower services and providing support for daily operations, including maintenance of the library’s circulating collections and general organizing and upkeep. In addition, Exeter PL is a certified passport acceptance facility and the part-time library assistant is expected to complete training for and act as a passport acceptance agent during specified times. This is a 15-hour per week position, mostly Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday/Saturday mornings, with occasional evenings and two Saturdays per month required.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide exemplary customer service.
- Assist in circulation functions and workflows, including checking materials in and out, retrieving items on search lists, and shelving and maintaining the neat and orderly appearance of the shelves.
- Register patrons for library cards and answer account questions and issues.
- Assist patrons with questions about library events, programs, and resources.
- Act as a certified passport acceptance agent during specified times.
- Follow policies and procedures without bias or judgement to ensure patron privacy and free and equal access to materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Effective demeanor and tact in all patron interactions.
- A high sense of responsibility and strong work ethic.
- Ability to make effective use of common web and PC applications.
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to push carts and bins loaded with books and other materials, and to retrieve materials from high and low shelves.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to work as a member of the team to stay on task and achieve shared goals.
Qualifications
- High-school diploma or equivalent.
- Patron or customer service experience a plus.
