What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paint Department Associate position at Exeter Paint Remodeling?
Position Summary
The Paint Department Associate works the paint counter at Exeter Paint — tinting, mixing, helping customers pick the right product, and keeping the department stocked and clean.
This is a hands-on support role. You are not responsible for ordering, pricing, or inventory decisions — the Paint Department Manager owns those. What you own is doing the work at the counter accurately and treating every customer, homeowner or contractor, like they matter.
Paint experience is required. Along with care, accuracy, and a willingness to learn the California Paints products. A mistinted gallon or a wrong quantity costs the customer a day and costs us money, so attention to detail matters more here than speed.
What You Will Do
At the Counter
- Tint, shake, and mix paint to order accurately, following the formula every time
- Help customers choose product, sheen, and quantity for what they are doing
- Pull color chips, fan decks, and sample pots; keep the color display full and in order
- Ring up sales and handle the point-of-sale accurately
- Answer the phone, take orders, and pass anything technical or unusual to the Paint Department Manager
- Bring returns, complaints, and product problems to the Manager rather than deciding them yourself
Stocking and Department Upkeep
- Receive deliveries, check them against the packing slip, and shelve product where it belongs
- Keep shelves faced, rotated, and full; flag low stock to the Manager before it runs out
- Keep the tint machine, shakers, counter, and floor clean throughout the day
- Handle five-gallon pails and heavier product safely
- Help with physical counts when the Manager schedules them
- Follow the opening and closing routine every shift
Job and Customer Support
- Pull and stage material for contractor pickups and for our own remodeling crews as directed
- Label and organize staged orders so the right material goes with the right job
- Support the showroom — greeting customers and directing them to the right product or person
What We Are Looking For
- Reliable and on time — the counter has to be covered
- Careful and accurate; willing to double-check a formula rather than guess
- Friendly and patient with customers, including at eight in the morning with contractors in a hurry
- Willing to learn paint, color, and product application; we will train the right person
- Comfortable being on your feet and lifting five-gallon pails
- Able to take direction from the Paint Department Manager and follow a routine without being reminded
Helpful, Not Required
- Prior paint, hardware, or building supply retail experience
- Experience running a tinting system
- Painting or trade background of any kind
- Point-of-sale or cash handling experience
