Position Title: Dean of Students

Reports To: School Principal

Employment Status: Full-Time, Exempt (12-Month Position)

Salary Range: $42,000.00–$55,000.00 annually, commensurate with education, experience, demonstrated leadership, and professional qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate shall possess the following minimum qualifications:

Education

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Educational Leadership, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, Criminal Justice, Child Development, Counseling, or a closely related field is required.

Bachelor's Degree in Education is preferred.

Master's Degree or coursework in Educational Leadership, School Administration, Counseling, or related field is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience working in:

K–12 schools;

Educational programs serving children or youth;

Student services;

Youth development programs;

Community-based organizations serving school-age children; or

Comparable educational settings.

Experience working directly with student behavior, school culture, attendance, discipline, conflict resolution, mentoring, or youth leadership preferred.

Experience supervising students in structured educational environments.

Certifications (Preferred)

Florida Educator Certificate or eligibility preferred.

CPI, Handle with Care, or Crisis Prevention/Intervention training preferred.

CPR/First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain upon employment.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Attendance and Engagement

The Dean shall:

Monitor daily attendance patterns and identify students demonstrating excessive absences or tardiness.

Collaborate with families, counselors, teachers, and administrators to improve student attendance.

Assist with truancy intervention strategies and attendance improvement plans.

Promote positive attendance through incentives, recognition, and student engagement initiatives.

Student Intervention and Support

The Dean shall:

Participate in MTSS, Child Study, PBIS, restorative practices, attendance review, and other student support meetings as assigned.

Assist with developing intervention plans for students exhibiting behavioral, attendance, or social-emotional concerns.

Coordinate mentoring opportunities and connect students with available school and community resources.

Support re-entry meetings following suspension, alternative placement, hospitalization, or extended absences.

Data Monitoring and Accountability

The Dean shall:

Analyze behavioral, attendance, and school climate data to identify trends and recommend interventions.

Prepare reports for the principal regarding discipline, attendance, behavior, and school culture.

Utilize student information systems to maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.

Assist the principal in evaluating the effectiveness of behavior intervention programs and school climate initiatives.

Staff Collaboration

The Dean shall:

Support teachers in implementing classroom management strategies.

Provide coaching and assistance regarding effective student behavior interventions.

Assist with professional development related to school culture, restorative practices, positive behavior supports, and student engagement.

Collaborate with counselors, ESE staff, ESOL personnel, social workers, school psychologists, and instructional staff to address student needs.

Parent and Community Partnerships

The Dean shall:

Develop positive working relationships with parents and guardians.

Coordinate parent conferences involving behavioral or attendance concerns.

Assist families in understanding school expectations and available support services.

Foster partnerships with community organizations that provide mentoring, counseling, youth development, and family support.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), restorative practices, and trauma-informed student support.

Knowledge of adolescent development, child behavior, and effective behavior intervention strategies.

Ability to interpret behavioral and attendance data and use the information to guide interventions.

Strong organizational, leadership, and decision-making skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to build trust while maintaining accountability and high expectations.

Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including families, community agencies, and school personnel.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Increased student participation in positive behavior and leadership initiatives.

Improvement in overall school climate survey results.

Increased parent engagement related to student behavior and attendance.

Successful implementation of the Excelsior House System across all grade levels.

Reduction in office discipline referrals requiring administrative intervention.

Increased use of restorative interventions resulting in improved student outcomes.

Demonstrated compliance with all documentation, reporting, and due process requirements.

PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS

The Dean of Students shall:

Demonstrate visible, proactive leadership throughout the school campus each day.

Serve as a positive role model reflecting professionalism, integrity, and high ethical standards.

Promote a culture of respect, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Maintain flexibility to perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

Support school-wide events, extracurricular activities, evening programs, and weekend activities as reasonably required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must regularly:

Walk throughout the school campus for extended periods.

Stand for prolonged periods while supervising students.

Climb stairs.

Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Respond quickly to emergency situations involving students.

Work both indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Dean of Students works in a dynamic school environment that requires continuous interaction with students, staff, parents, and community members.
