What are the responsibilities and job description for the powertrain test engineer position at Excel Engineering?
Excel Engineering is currently seeking a Powertrain Test Engineer to work in Diagonal, IA and/or Van Buren Twp., MI. Test Engineers work as an individual and in teams to carryout highly technical powertrain and vehicle tests for some of the world's leading engine & vehicle OEM's and suppliers.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter, motivated by solving problems, and exceeding customers' expectations. The Test Engineer will set up, maintain, and operate test cells.
Responsibilities regularly include:
•Engine preparation
•Dyno cell operation/testing
•Fabrication/set-up of test fixtures
•Performing lab test procedures
•Vehicle testing
•Diagnosing/troubleshooting engines/drivetrains/test rigs
•Creating test procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain / operate engine, drivetrain and vehicle test benches, associated equipment and instrumentation
- Perform as a Project Manager ensuring timelines are met, and customers are informed / engaged
- Consistent effective communication with customer engineers and co-workers
- Recognize and initiate discussions on project scope creep
- Organize information and equipment
- Set up production and prototype engines, vehicles, and instrumentation
- Provide test support for complex tests without significant assistance from others
- Ability to competently carry out multiple tasks, tests, and projects in parallel
- Proficient in creating automated tests using test cell software
- Support facility issues affecting test cell operation
- Proficient time management skills demonstrated by working on organizational objectives (e.g. 5S, Safety, Capability improvement) during project downtime
- Perform work according to organizations SOP's and ISO procedures
- Complete all work in a safe manner, being responsible for proper use of equipment, PPE, and work methods, as well as promoting a safety mindset
- Performs day to day maintenance checks / housekeeping on projects
- Attend meetings as required
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but leadership is expected to help, coach, and work with teammates associated with similar projects
Education/Competencies/Skills/Experience

- Ability to learn operation of dynamometer test cells
- Ability to learn effective use of all types of electronic troubleshooting and repair equipment including: oscilloscopes, multimeters, current probes, signal generators, frequency counters, spectrum analyzers, through-hole and surface mount soldering equipment, crimp tools
- Understanding of mechanical measurement devices and instruments used in measuring temperature, pressure, flow, etc. and their use
- Ability to learn how to wire electrical systems such as instrumentation power supplies, controls, sensors, actuators, VFDs and motors
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, assembly drawings and technical data sheets
- Proficiency with machine tools, including drill press, band saw, sander, etc.
- Proficiency with hand tools used in engine / driveline maintenance
- Knowledge of welding and fabricating
- Able to be trained in equipment operation: forklift, boom lift, scissor lift, Telehandler, etc.
- Competency in computer software including MS Office suite, test cell control software and complex combustion measurement equipment (Cyflex, engine communication software, FileZilla)
- Education Preferred:
4-year bachelor's degree in technical related studies - Work Experience:
Zero (0) – five (5) years required in technical and / or project management roles, but on the job training is possible with the right candidate
