The Academic Advisor II provides comprehensive academic advising and student support for University Studies (UNIS), major exploration, and transitional student populations. This role supports student retention, progression, and completion through proactive outreach, major exploration guidance, and data-informed interventions.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Conduct holistic academic advising for current, prospective, and exploratory students through multiple modalities (in-person, virtual, phone, and email).
  • Provide guidance on degree requirements, course selection, and academic policies while supporting students in identifying and clarifying academic and career goals.
  • Support students in major exploration and transition, including those considering or pursuing the University Studies (UNIS) program.
  • Assist students in evaluating academic options, understanding major requirements, and making informed decisions aligned with their strengths, interests, and long-term goals.
  • Manage and monitor the academic progress of an assigned caseload, including students in UNIS, undeclared, and major exploration populations.
  • Conduct proactive outreach to provide timely interventions related to academic standing, early alerts, and progression barriers.
  • Review degree MAP and verify progress toward completion.
  • Process academic forms (major changes, graduation-related items), remove holds, and document all student interactions in
  • Mavlnspire in alignment with best practices.
  • Provide targeted support for students navigating major changes, academic difficulty, or uncertainty in academic direction.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support students transitioning between majors, including referral coordination and follow-up.
  • Assist in the implementation of structured pathways for major exploration, exploratory semester planning, and transition into UNIS or other academic programs, ensuring students maintain momentum toward degree completion.
  • Advise students on academic warning, probation, or dismissal, with a focus on both academic recovery and long-term academic alignment.
  • Assess individual student circumstances and provide personalized guidance that supports decision-making, resilience, and accountability.
  • Help students connect academic performance to major fit and long term goals, including when a major change or transition may be appropriate.
  • Utilize advising technologies and data systems (e.g., Mavlnspire, SAS, MyMav) to inform outreach strategies.
  • Contribute to initiatives related to retention, major exploration, and completion, including workshops, and events.
  • Collaborate with advising units, colleges, and student support offices to ensure coordinated and consistent student support.
  • Participate in professional development, trainings, and campus committees related to advising, student success, and retention.
  • Stay current on university policies, degree requirements, and best practices in academic advising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental and institutional goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience working with college students or adolescents in an advising capacity or the equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree is strongly preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience as an academic advisor at a public R1 University.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Federal, state, and local policies and procedures governing academic advising functions; and resources provided by academic advising associations such as NACADA and TEXAAN. A working knowledge and ability to utilize the University Catalog is essential.
  • Student advocacy; written and verbal interpersonal communication; organizing information and projects; problem solving; adhering to deadlines; taking initiative; student recruitment and outreach; and navigating student information systems.
  • Work professionally, collaboratively, and independently; and proficiently use Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint.
  • Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working collaboratively with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
