POSITION SUMMARY
The Ewing Marion Kauffman School is a free, public charter school serving 1000 students in 5th through 12th grades. Focused on student achievement and strong character, the Kauffman School’s mission is to support students in maximizing their opportunities for post-secondary success. The school serves a student population of which 87% qualify for free and reduced lunch and 90% identify as students of color. Students are accepted by a lottery that prioritizes the six highest-need zip codes within the district. More than 70% of our students identify as first in their families to attend college. From serving as certified doulas to attending graduate school to starting their own local small businesses, our alumni are shaping their post-secondary paths and we are incredibly proud of their determination and drive. We are seeking an intern to support our College Access and Success (CAS) Department with driving towards are mission of student success.
COLLEGE ACCESS AND SUCCESS:
This Department's mission is to support students’ persistence through post-secondary pathways: college, trade, career, and more. Starting junior year, students receive personalized support on post-secondary choices that best align to the students' career interest and personality. We continue to support students senior year through post-secondary applications and decision process. After graduation, our persistence coaches further support as students navigate the post high school world and programs. We believe in authentic and honest student relationships to best support students navigating the post-secondary process.
ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:
The EMKS College Access Alumni Internship program is an opportunity for students to get experience with project planning, communication/marketing, and the ins-and-outs of supporting students in their post-secondary pathway or career progress. As the person on the team who has the most recent on the ground experience, our interns are uniquely situated to give feedback to EMKS and our team to help us improve the alumni experience.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Day to day technical duties: gathering information, replying to emails, calling students, universities, and families.
- All interns will manage a project that is determined based on the intern’s development goals and college access priorities
- Work alongside junior, senior, and alumni counselors to support students in identifying their purpose and pathway
- Work directly with high school students to support them with college/career applications and resources
- Support the creation of data dashboards, charts, and reports for school leadership and teachers
- Create social media posts to engage with students and families
- Utilize mail merge techniques to send communication to students and families
- Organize data files, maintain spreadsheets, and ensure data accuracy
- Maintain confidentiality and follow FERPA and other data privacy guidelines
- Research opportunities to add to systems for students to utilize from year to year
BY THE END OF THE INTERNSHIP:
- Gain hands-on experience working with educational data in a real-world K–12 setting.
- Develop skills in project management, communication, attention to detail, and procedural consistency
- Learn how to support data-informed decisions that impact teaching and learning
- Develop technical and professional skills in data handling, analysis, and reporting
QUALIFICATIONS: PREFERRED SKILLS AND PAST EXPERIENCES
- Experience working with a team to meet goals
- Implementing and giving feedback in a team setting
- Computer and technology skills- typing, sending emails, updating documents, basic use of excel and ppts
- Comfort with direct and indirect communication with students, teachers, staff, and adults.
- Proficient at informal and formal communication (email, texts, phone calls, etc)
- Strong problem solving abilities when given tasks to complete
- Experience working independently and self-motivating to complete your work
- US citizenship or authorization to work in the US
TIME INVOLVEMENT AND COMMITMENT
- 10-15 hours a week (part time)
- You design a consistent weekly schedule based on negotiated time commitment
- Per hour pay: $13.75 - $16.00
