About the Opportunity
A growing and dynamic multi-state organization is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to lead and oversee all aspects of Human Resources operations, strategy, compliance, employee relations, talent management, and organizational development.
This is a highly visible leadership role that serves as a strategic business partner to executive leadership while supporting a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing workplace culture. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence organizational growth, workforce planning, employee engagement, leadership development, and operational effectiveness across a diverse workforce.
The Director of Human Resources will oversee all areas of HR, including employee relations, compliance, talent acquisition, compensation, benefits administration, payroll oversight, leave management, safety, training and development, investigations, employee engagement, HR operations, and workforce planning.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Human Resources Leadership
- Partner closely with executive leadership and department managers to align HR strategies with business objectives and operational needs.
- Provide strategic guidance and coaching regarding employee relations, organizational development, leadership effectiveness, workforce planning, succession planning, performance management, and change management initiatives.
- Develop and implement Human Resources programs, policies, procedures, and initiatives that support organizational growth and operational excellence.
- Promote a professional, collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations across multiple states.
- Monitor employment law developments and proactively advise leadership regarding compliance obligations and risk management strategies.
- Manage and support leave administration, ADA accommodations, interactive process obligations, wage and hour compliance, harassment prevention, workplace safety initiatives, workplace violence prevention, pay transparency requirements, and policy administration.
- Conduct or oversee workplace investigations that are prompt, thorough, impartial, and appropriately documented.
Employee Relations & Performance Management
- Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership regarding employee relations matters, performance concerns, disciplinary actions, corrective action, reorganizations, staffing decisions, and separations.
- Support managers in maintaining consistent application of policies and employment practices.
- Develop and implement employee engagement, retention, and workforce development initiatives.
- Lead leadership development and performance management programs.
Talent Acquisition & Organizational Development
- Oversee recruiting, onboarding, retention, succession planning, and workforce planning initiatives.
- Develop talent strategies that support business objectives and long-term organizational growth.
- Support organizational design and workforce optimization efforts.
Compensation, Benefits & Payroll
- Oversee compensation administration, including job description development, market pricing, wage analysis, compensation structures, and pay practices.
- Coordinate employee benefit programs, vendor relationships, annual renewals, open enrollment activities, and employee communications.
- Maintain oversight of payroll administration processes and systems.
- Experience with Paylocity and/or ADP payroll systems is strongly preferred.
HR Operations & Technology
- Utilize HR metrics, reporting, and analytics to support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Ensure compliant and ethical use of AI and automated decision-making tools within HR processes.
- Oversee HR systems, vendors, and third-party service providers.
- Drive process improvements and operational efficiencies within the HR function.
Training & Development
- Lead employee and leadership training initiatives, including:
- Harassment prevention training
- Leadership development
- Performance management training
- Safety programs
- Employee handbook rollouts
- 401(k) education
- Workplace violence prevention and emergency preparedness initiatives
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive Human Resources leadership experience.
- Strong experience supporting California employment law compliance.
- Experience supporting multi-state workforces required.
- Experience supporting international employees and operations is a plus.
- Demonstrated success partnering with leadership to implement HR strategies that support organizational growth and business objectives.
- Strong employee relations, workplace investigations, compliance, organizational development, and performance management experience.
- Payroll administration experience or strong payroll systems knowledge preferred.
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification preferred.
- Commitment to remaining current on employment law developments and HR best practices.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of California and federal employment laws and HR best practices.
- Strong business acumen and ability to advise executive leadership on workforce, organizational, compliance, and employee relations matters.
- Excellent leadership, coaching, conflict resolution, and investigation skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to use data and metrics to identify trends and support business decisions.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- High level of professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
- Experience managing HR vendors, systems, and external service providers preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, and Google Workspace applications.
