The nature of the academic experience at Evergreen requires that this position remains flexible in supporting a frequently changing, multi-disciplinary curriculum. The incumbent is required to develop knowledge and skills in multiple scientific disciplines, such as biology, molecular biology, chemistry, physics, electronics, geology, botany, computer science, ornithology, and ecology.
- In conjunction with faculty, develop laboratory exercises, field trips, and demonstrations.
- Acquire and prepare equipment, chemicals, and supplies needed to implement laboratory exercises and field trips.
- Set up, test, and modify labs and problem solve as necessary to ensure high quality educational outcomes.
- Design, construct, and test equipment necessary for delivery of the lab curriculum.
- Provide faculty and staff with equipment, instrumentation, and space scheduling assistance.
Laboratory and Instrumentation Implementation
- Instruct students in scientific concepts and laboratory and/or field techniques.
- Instruct students and faculty to use laboratory glassware, equipment, supplies, and instrumentation in laboratory and field settings.
- Collect and properly handle and store hazardous wastes generated in science laboratories or field work.
- Coordinate the activities of students, faculty, and staff in cleaning science facilities and field equipment following laboratory or field work.
- Monitor laboratory spaces to ensure they are in functional condition.
- Inspect, test, maintain, operate, and repair laboratory and field science equipment, including analytical instruments, and associated software.
- Monitor the use of analytical instruments to ensure their safe operation and efficient use of resources in the science laboratories and field trips.
- Develop instructional methods and materials for instrumentation.
- May train student aides to instruct others in the theory and use of analytical instrumentation.
- Hire, train, and supervise part-time student aides who are responsible for supporting the preparation of lab and field activities.
Safety
- Design, implement, and monitor effective safety procedures for the science laboratories, field work, and faculty and student research.
- Train students, staff, and faculty in current laboratory and field safety procedures.
- Monitor potential risks and hazards to ensure a safe laboratory and field trip environment.
- Obtain relevant and/or required safety training for boating activities, lab work, or field work.
- Maintain records of safety training performed.
Administration
- Consult regularly with other professional staff to provide quality science instruction.
- Collaboratively evaluate the quality of laboratory instruction and the other services provided by ICST’s regularly and make recommendations for improvement.
- Use a variety of computer software for activities, including Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Zoom, and other applications for database management, web browsing, spreadsheet analysis, data acquisition, instrumentation, and statistical analysis.
- Assist in the organization and oversight of the facilities, equipment, and supplies in Lab I and Lab II.
- Evaluate equipment needs and specifications and make purchase recommendations.
- Participate in professional development activities designed to update the skills and knowledge needed to continue providing relevant professional guidance and instruction to students, faculty, and staff.
- Assist with hiring and training new ICSTs.
- Maintain records and prepare forms as necessary.
- May serve on the following committees: staff and faculty hiring, laboratory design and remodel, health and safety, emergency response team, lab council, or other relevant committees.
- May be required to take lead on any of the following: scientific boating, instrumentation coordination, radiation safety, lab waste management, or equipment repair.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

- Good working knowledge of chemistry and other scientific disciplines, such as biology, molecular biology, physics, electronics, geology, botany, computer science, and ecology.
- Ability to problem-solve issues encountered by students during laboratory or field explorations.
- Ability to maintain and repair lab and field equipment and specialized instruments.
- Ability to identify equipment and supply needs.
- Ability to research, evaluate, and order supplies and equipment within budgetary constraints.
- Ability to effectively use various types of computers and associated hardware and software applications.
- Ability and willingness to continually develop knowledge and skills in multiple scientific disciplines.

- Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
- This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
- Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080.
