Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt On-Call (max. 29 hours per week)
Reports to: Education Director
POSITION SUMMARY
The Education Instructor will support the Education Department of the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in the following areas (in order of priority):
- Instruction and facilitation of the Museum’s educational programs at the request of the Director
- Working with the Director, other Instructors and Assistants to create a collaborative environment
- Supporting the development of educational programs (upon request).
This position is an on-call, temporary role, and scheduling is contingent upon program needs, including but not limited to student enrollment and operational considerations.
While the Museum will make every effort to provide advance notice of scheduled work, the Museum reserves the right to cancel or reschedule work due to low enrollment, inclement weather, or other unforeseen circumstances. Participation in the on-call instructor pool does not guarantee a minimum number of hours or compensation. Similarly, instructors may decline specific assignments without penalty.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instruction & Facilitation: teach the following core educational experiences of EASM:
- Field Trips (Educator-Led tours, greeting self-guided groups)
- Remote Programs (e.g. Museum in a Box)
- Museum Camps (Day, Spring, Summer, Weekend, etc.)
- Special projects and events (tables, booths, workshops, etc.)
- Leading by Example
- Support other Instructors and Assistants during Spring and Summer Camp seasons in particular
- Substitute for other Instructors and Assistants whenever possible (Field Trips, Remotes, etc.)
- Program Development (upon request)
- Develop and upgrade educational programming in alignment with the Education Director’s vision
- Assist in the design of our programs for a K-12 educational community through research and development
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year accredited university
- 5 professional experience in any field, level, or capacity (references encouraged)
- 2 experience working in educational settings, especially with K-12 school-aged children
- 1 year experience in classroom management (any age and classroom size)
NICE QUALIFICATIONS TO HAVE
- Degrees or coursework in education, instructional design, classroom management
- 5 experience working in education, especially with K-12 school-aged children
- Certifications in teaching / instruction from an accredited institution or organization
- Experience with students of diverse learning abilities, needs, and styles
- Consistent availability on weeknights and weekends
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to engage students with a variety of learning styles.
- Ability to continually evaluate and modify existing curriculum to achieve maximum engagement with students.
- Ability to create a fun environment for students and staff.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, in writing and orally across various media, that adhere to confidentiality and protocol.
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
- Good classroom management experience, including time management, coordination, and organizational skills.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work alone and without supervision much of the time.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Regularly performs tasks with hands and fingers for grasping and holding objects.
- Regularly performs office-related tasks at a desk or workstation while sitting, such as: keyboarding, phones, handwriting, filing, etc.
- Sometimes pushes, pulls, lifts, and/or carries up to 50 pounds across a distance with or without supportive devices.
- Sometimes stands, walks, bends, stoops, crouches, reaches, climbs, and kneels throughout the workday.
