WORK SCHEDULE
Evening Shift: Wed-Sun, 2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Subject to schedule change and call-out.
ABOUT THE AIRPORT
Evansville Regional Airport (EVV), operated by the Evansville-Vanderburgh Airport Authority District, is an FAA Part 139–certificated commercial service airport supporting daily commercial passenger operations, general aviation, cargo, and a 24/7/365 airfield environment. The Building Facilities Maintenance team keeps the terminal, support buildings, and associated systems safe, clean, code-compliant, and operating reliably for the flying public, tenants, and Authority staff.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodian performs routine building maintenance and custodial tasks throughout the Evansville Regional Airport terminal building. The Custodian works with limited supervision under the direction of the Building and Facilities Maintenance Chief to maintain clean, safe, and presentable facilities for the flying public, tenants, and Authority staff. Work is performed in a 24/7/365 commercial service airport environment and requires compliance with all applicable security and safety protocols.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are representative of the work performed in this classification. They are not intended to be exhaustive, and other related duties may be assigned.
General Custodial
- Sweeps and mops floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets.
- Scours restroom fixtures, sinks, and drinking fountains; cleans and polishes mirrors.
- Cleans interior windows, glass partitions, entrance door glass, and storefront/display glass throughout the terminal to maintain clear, streak-free surfaces.
- Empties trash containers and picks up litter throughout the facility.
- Cleans and sanitizes common areas, restrooms, and public spaces to maintain appearance and hygiene standards.
- Cleans elevator interiors, escalator treads, and handrails on a scheduled basis.
- Restocks restroom dispensers with paper towels, toilet tissue, soap, and related supplies; maintains par levels and notifies supervisor when stock is low.
- Cleans and disinfects high-touch surfaces including door handles, handrails, elevator buttons, countertops, and seating throughout the terminal.
- Responds promptly to spills and other immediate cleaning needs to maintain safe and passable walkways.
- Cleans up bodily fluids and other bio-hazardous materials following established safety and bloodborne pathogen protocols.
Floor Care
- Operates commercial floor care equipment including floor scrubbers, rotary buffers, and burnishers on hard-surface floors throughout the terminal.
- Performs scheduled deep-cleaning and floor finishing (stripping, waxing, and burnishing) on tile, terrazzo, and other hard-surface flooring.
- Cleans and performs basic operator-level maintenance on floor care equipment; reports mechanical issues to the supervisor.
Gate and Concourse Operations
- Cleans and restores gate areas — including seating, carpets, hard floors, and trash receptacles — between arriving and departing flights to meet turnaround time requirements.
- Cleans and maintains the baggage claim area, including carousels, surrounding floors, and adjacent public spaces.
- Works within TSA-secured areas of the terminal in compliance with all SIDA badge requirements and security protocols.
Building Maintenance
- Reports unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and facility needs to the supervisor.
Safety and General
- Places wet floor signs, safety cones, and caution barriers in work areas during cleaning operations; removes them promptly upon completion.
- Follows established cleaning schedules, checklists, and rotation plans for assigned areas of the terminal.
- Maintains cleaning supply cart and janitor storage areas in a clean, organized, and properly stocked condition.
- Follows all applicable safety procedures and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the task.
- Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others within well-established policies, procedures, and standards.
- Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data and information.
- Knowledge of commercial cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and their proper dilution, application, and safe storage in accordance with MSDS/SDS requirements.
- Knowledge of OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards and proper procedures for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous materials.
- Skill in operating commercial floor care equipment including scrubbers, buffers, and burnishers.
- Ability to utilize a variety of reference materials such as safety training materials, work requests, maintenance records, and equipment operating manuals.
- Ability to communicate effectively with airline personnel, airport users, vendor representatives, and Airport management.
- Ability to manage time effectively in a fast-paced, public-facing environment with flight-driven cleaning schedules.
- Ability to perform basic mathematics — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply functional reasoning in performing routine functions following clearly prescribed standard practices.
- Ability to exercise judgment and decisiveness in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which may be subject to frequent change.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One to two years of custodial experience, preferably in a high-traffic public facility such as an airport, hotel, or similar environment.
- Experience operating commercial floor care equipment preferred.
- Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, and to comply with the Authority’s Drug and Alcohol Policy.
- Ability to pass a rigorous background security check to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds maximum.
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform active physical tasks for the duration of a shift.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing skilled movements such as various equipment use.
- Ability to exert required physical effort to perform light to moderate work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to work in a public-facing environment while maintaining professionalism and positive interactions with passengers, tenants, and airline personnel.
- Adequate vision (with or without correction) and color recognition to safely identify work-related conditions, hazards, and equipment markings.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in a 24/7/365 commercial service airport environment with active passenger operations, including exposure to flight schedules, security protocols, and high-traffic public spaces.
- Work is performed both indoors and at times in occasionally hazardous or uncomfortable conditions, including exposure to temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, and/or dust.
- Position may require working in TSA-secured areas of the terminal; SIDA badge compliance is required at all times while in secured areas.
- Position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the task, including but not limited to gloves, safety footwear, and eye protection.
- This position is part of a multi-shift operation covering day and evening shifts, Monday through Friday. Position is subject to schedule change and call-out as needed.
