Position OverviewThe Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing all engineering, maintenance, and facility operations within the hotel. This leadership role ensures the property's physical assets, equipment, and building systems are maintained to the highest standards while supporting exceptional guest experiences, operational efficiency, safety compliance, and asset preservation.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Team Management- Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate engineering and maintenance staff.
- Provide coaching, development, and performance management for department team members.
- Conduct departmental meetings and ongoing training programs.
- Ensure proper staffing coverage for all shifts, emergencies, and on-call situations.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and teamwork.
- Oversee daily maintenance of all hotel facilities and guest areas.
- Ensure proper operation of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire life safety, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, elevators, and building automation systems.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency situations.
- Maintain guestrooms, public spaces, meeting rooms, and back-of-house areas in excellent condition.
- Monitor utility consumption and implement energy-saving initiatives.
- Coordinate repairs to minimize guest disruption and operational downtime.
- Develop and manage comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules.
- Conduct routine inspections of mechanical, electrical, and structural systems.
- Ensure maintenance logs, work orders, and inspection records are properly completed and maintained.
- Track equipment performance and recommend repairs or replacements as needed.
- Implement asset preservation strategies to extend equipment life.
- Plan and oversee renovation projects, equipment upgrades, and capital improvements.
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and consultants.
- Review project specifications, drawings, and contractor proposals.
- Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to hotel standards.
- Monitor quality control throughout all project phases.
- Develop and manage departmental operating budgets.
- Monitor labor costs, supply expenses, and maintenance expenditures.
- Obtain competitive bids and negotiate vendor contracts.
- Control inventory of engineering tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining operational standards.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA requirements and hotel safety standards.
- Oversee fire life safety systems, emergency generators, and security-related infrastructure.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments.
- Lead emergency response efforts involving facility-related incidents.
- Maintain required permits, certifications, and inspection records.
- Establish and maintain relationships with service providers and contractors.
- Schedule and supervise third-party maintenance and repair work.
- Ensure contractors comply with hotel safety and operational requirements.
- Review service agreements and evaluate vendor performance.
- Prepare operational and maintenance reports for hotel leadership.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, logs, and compliance documentation.
- Track departmental KPIs, including response times, preventive maintenance completion rates, and equipment reliability.
- Provide recommendations regarding facility improvements and long-term asset planning.
- Minimum 5 years of engineering or facilities management experience, preferably in hospitality.
- Previous supervisory or management experience required.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building systems.
- Experience with preventive maintenance programs and hotel operations.
- Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and equipment manuals.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
- Proficiency with maintenance management software and Microsoft Office.
- Hotel engineering experience strongly preferred.
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or other trade certifications.
- OSHA certification or equivalent safety training.
- Experience managing capital improvement projects and vendor relationships.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.
- Ability to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and other facility environments.
