ETS Research Institute has an opening for a psychometrician in the Center for National and International Assessments. The successful candidate will be engaged in projects and research aimed at advancing the science and practice of large-scale educational survey assessments such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The position offers exciting opportunities for researchers interested in contributing to external and internal projects designed to develop and evaluate measurement and statistical models suitable for educational survey assessments.

What You’ll Do

You will work as a team member, primarily focusing on design and analysis of the federally funded survey assessment projects.

Basic Functions And Responsibilities

Conduct testing program operational work

  • Leadership: Lead and have responsibility for assigned projects such as coordinating the work for a basic testing program or segments of complex testing programs. Responsibilities include preparation of planning memorandum, monitoring expenses, delegating work, monitoring, and reviewing work delegated, and coordination of work schedules and progress toward goals. Provide guidance to data analysts.
  • Score reporting: Independently conduct the statistical work required for score reporting and data interpretation for multiple basic programs and/or segments of complex testing programs. Make important contributions to the planning and coordinating of the score reporting and associated statistical work.
  • Statistical work: Conduct other statistical work needed by the program and participate in planning, testing, and implementing major operational analysis tools for the testing programs.
  • Quality control: Review all results for reasonableness and accuracy.
  • Documentation of work: Develop score interpretation materials and testing program publications. Prepare statistical reports for testing programs.
  • Program design: Contribute to complex psychometric design and analysis decisions.
  • Operating procedures: Make important contributions to the design, development, and documentation of technical and operating procedures and statistical guidelines for assigned programs.
  • Contracts and proposals: Contribute to proposals for new contracts as directed by senior scientists, psychometricians, and programs leadership with limited responsibility for writing tasks and contributing ideas for responses to contract requirements.

Special projects and research for testing program

  • Respond to client requests: Communicate with client. Frame request and develop plan for preparing response. Conduct necessary analysis or delegate to data analysts and oversee analysts work. Prepare written response for clients. Present orally or discuss informally results with client. More generally, serve as a resource to the client as needed.
  • Program improvement: Take initiative to identify inefficiency and places for improvements in program procedures, propose solutions, initiate discussions of the potential effects of changes in programs with appropriate staff, when agreed to by program leadership test the proposed solutions, and implement or work with team to implement solutions that work.
  • Client or contracted-oriented research: client or contract-oriented research consists of research projects requested by the client or specified in contracts with the client. It might be around program improvements or involve empirical studies related to the program or the data created. Lead small to moderate projects by being responsible for the plan, staffing, budgets, and completing all deliverables on time, procure and ensure quality of data, conduct analysis, prepare reports, present results to the client, and disseminate results more broadly as appropriate and allowable by the contract.

Conduct novel research

  • Conceptualize: Conceptualize the need for new knowledge of relevance to the testing program broadly defined. Identified research questions can be in direct response to issues identified with the testing program or from related areas of psychometrics, statistics, or measurement.
  • Plan: Develop plans for addressing the specified research questions
  • Conduct work: Conduct the research and produce deliverables within the proposed timeline
    • Publish scientific papers and represent ETS in international and domestic conferences .
EDUCATION

A Ph.D. in Psychometrics, Educational Measurement, Statistics, Survey Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Quantitative Psychology, or closely related field is required.

Eligibility & Experience

  • Three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in educational measurement, quantitative psychology, engineering, and progressively independent measurement and statistical research are required.
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must complete a background investigation and fingerprint check
