Veterinary Technician Learning & Development Specialist - SAGE Dublin

$35.00–$45.00/hour (DOE)

Full-time opportunity in Dublin, California

Schedule: 4/10s. Schedule flexibility is required to facilitate training across different shifts and departments.

SAGE Veterinary Centers is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician Learning & Development Specialist (TLDS) to plan, organize, and direct the clinical training and professional development of our Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants.

This is a hands-on clinical role for an experienced veterinary professional who enjoys both working on the hospital floor and developing others. The TLDS continues to work as a Veterinary Technician while assessing clinical skills, training new team members, supporting onboarding, and overseeing technician continuing education for the hospital team. The division of time between the floor and training may vary based on the number of new hires, training needs, and other factors, and the specific area of focus is set by hospital leadership and may shift as hospital needs change.

Why Join SAGE Dublin

At SAGE Dublin, part of Ethos Veterinary Health, you’ll join one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most respected specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals. Our team is dedicated to delivering compassionate, collaborative, and advanced veterinary care while utilizing state-of-the-art technology and innovative treatment options. Services include emergency and critical care, urgent care, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, and surgery, and we are equally committed to fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture focused on teamwork, learning, and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Work hands-on as a Veterinary Technician while serving as a clinical trainer and mentor for Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants.
  • Assess, train, and develop new team members as a primary focus of the role.
  • Facilitate Veterinary Assistant and Veterinary Technician training across all skill levels through direct, hands-on clinical instruction and a train-the-trainer approach.
  • Directly train team members in accordance with written hospital protocols.
  • Plan and present clinical in-service training and educational sessions.
  • Direct and oversee all technician continuing education (CE), both live and online through VetBloom and Talent Unleashed.
  • Assign required VetBloom and Talent Unleashed training to all new employees.
  • Partner with Clinical Supervisors to facilitate learning and development plans, including direct training and an effective, timely protocol sign-off process.
  • Assist with developing, coordinating, and delivering onboarding and role-specific training across hospital departments, including ezyVet training for non-nursing roles and triage-process training for front desk teams, in collaboration with department leadership.
  • Track training modules for all technician levels, including clinical competencies and non-clinical compliance training such as Code of Conduct, Handbook sign-offs, and other acknowledgements.
  • Provide input into the development, standardization, and sign-off process for technician protocol practicals.
  • Provide timely feedback to team members and leadership regarding training progress and development needs.
  • Collaborate with the Ethos Clinical Learning & Development team and other TLDS across the Division to ensure updated training is deployed.
  • Work with local Medicine and Operations teams and Regional L&D and Event Management teams on agenda planning, speaker identification, and general support of CE events for Ethos Technicians and referring DVM teams.
  • Promote an environment conducive to learning and a culture of learning consistent with the Ethos mission, vision, and values.

Qualifications

  • Current Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), or equivalent credential required.
  • Knowledge of advanced veterinary practices, procedures, and terminology, with strong hands-on technical skills.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) credential, including ACVECCT-VTS, is a plus.
  • Experience training, mentoring, precepting, or developing Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants.
  • Ability to confidently perform and teach veterinary clinical skills, including patient assessment and triage, venipuncture, medication and fluid administration, CPR, and patient care.
  • Ability to appropriately handle, lift, and restrain dogs and cats, and to stand for long periods of time.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including communicating effectively with technicians and doctors regarding patient needs.
  • Strong presentation and coaching skills, with the ability to provide constructive feedback to employees at varying levels of clinical experience.
  • Ability to multitask and produce quality work while making effective decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to track multiple training and development initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision, as well as collaboratively with technicians, veterinarians, hospital leadership, and Learning & Development partners.
  • Ability to adapt training approaches to individual learning needs and changing hospital priorities.
  • Experience with veterinary electronic medical record systems such as ezyVet and learning management systems preferred.
