PERMACULTURE PROGRAM WORKER

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is for high school students who want to complete an internship in EVRPD’s Permaculture Program. This position includes landscaping, collection of elk waste and grass clippings, composting, planting, collecting water and snow study samples, trail improvements and maintenance, minor construction, building and equipment repairs. Requires basic skills in rough carpentry, repairing and maintaining grounds and trails amenities, and related mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and irrigation systems. This employee’s work schedule traditionally occurs on weekdays between 7 AM and 3:30 PM; 6 AM and 2:30 PM during peak summer hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Landscaping and maintenance of all EVRPD permaculture grounds, golf courses, trails, green space, park amenities, and equipment.
- Assist with permaculture program development, parks and trails capital improvement projects including elk fence construction and business model development.
- Complete routine composting and planting activities such as filling, operating and cleaning grounds utility vehicles.
- Perform minor equipment repair and daily maintenance (e.g., Bicycles, E bikes, tractors, trucks, power tools, fences, mowers, trail tools, etc.)
- Perform snow and water quality studies, program development and set-up, sawing, pruning, litter pickup, noxious weed control, fence building, beekeeping, and clear culvert debris.
- Operate and maintain a visitor outreach program to disseminate elk awareness information to the visiting public. Assist in the enforcement of related rules and ordinances.
- Ensure safety of all EVRPD parks and trails facilities and equipment. Communicate all safety concerns to supervisor immediately. Always carry and wear proper protective gear.
- Maintain situational awareness regarding personal and public safety.
- Obey and comply with all EVRPD, Local, State, and Federal ordinances and policies.
OTHER DUTIES
- Assist in resolving concerns and complaints from staff or the general public.
- Keep abreast of new developments in the field, new methods and techniques and current issues through continued education and professional growth.
- Assist with permaculture program development research, grow-in procedures, and requisitions for review and approval.
- Install, manage and maintain beehive operations as needed.
- Maintain a variety of records (e.g., survey data, reports, service logs, equipment inventories, etc.)
- Assist other departments and perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
- Perform parks and trails maintenance functions and operate a truck, trailer, and parks and trails equipment for daily duties.
- Use of parks and trails maintenance equipment including tractors, mowers, chainsaws, weed eaters, blowers, pick mattocks, McLeods, Council Rakes, and various other related equipment.
- Principles, methods, materials, and practices used in gardening activities, composting, grounds work, beekeeping, trail construction and maintenance.
- Irrigation systems, weed control, fertilization, grass cutting and procedures, soil testing, athletic installing drainage structures, water bar rehabilitation, landscaping, and trail preparation and construction.
- Coordinate projects, understand and anticipate problems, follow department policies and procedures, interpret written instructions, reports, maps, manuals and schematics is essential, which includes a good working knowledge of mathematics.
- Concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions, perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession, and perform job responsibilities in a timely manner in order to meet scheduled deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, follow oral and written instructions, and possess average written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
- Operate a computer, calculator, fax, and copier; Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook skills.
- Establish, maintain and foster positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Required:
- Student enrolled in the Este Park High School
- Preferred:
- One year’s experience in ground maintenance or trails maintenance.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Majority of work occurs outside and occasionally inside, taking place in all kinds of weather conditions and within various environments.
- Work will occur across uneven terrain, including hills, slopes, grades, near rivers and ponds, which may present numerous slipping and tripping hazards, and interactions with wildlife.
- Exposed to weather and temperature extremes, and chemicals such as fertilizers.
- Work near moving mechanical parts and subject to electrical shock and vibration.
- Exposed to dirt, dust, grease, loud noises, foul odors, fumes, heights, work safety hazards, darkness, and cramped spaces.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Requires the ability to drive between various locations and occasionally transport supplies during the performance of the job duties.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, balance, bend; use overhead activity; hand gripping; fine motor control; twisting; climb (heights greater than 20 feet); stoop; squat; kneel; crouch; and crawl. \
- Regularly required to use dexterity of hands and fingers to finger, handle, grasp and feel.
- Need ability to talk, hear, smell, maintain physical balance and physical control, coordination including eye/hand, hand/foot, and have a high level of endurance.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to and in excess of 50 pounds and possess above average physical mobility, strength, and agility.
- Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
