Job Summary The Senior Medical Director is a key clinical executive responsible for overseeing the quality, safety, and effectiveness of patient care across Essen Health Care’s clinical programs, with a strong focus on geriatric and long-term care populations. This leader drives clinical excellence, ensures regulatory compliance, and partners closely with executive leadership to implement strategies that enhance patient outcomes, optimize operational efficiency, and support organizational growth.
The Senior Medical Director will lead quality improvement initiatives, develop and implement clinical programs, and provide mentorship and oversight to physicians and clinical staff. Responsibilities include
Clinical Leadership & Quality Oversight
- Provide executive oversight of clinical care delivery, ensuring high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care
- Lead and oversee Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs
- Monitor clinical outcomes and implement strategies to improve patient care and reduce operating costs
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission standards
- Assess patient populations and identify opportunities for new clinical programs and service lines
- Develop and implement innovative care models, particularly for geriatric and long-term care populations
- Lead pilot programs and initiatives aimed at improving clinical quality and operational efficiency
- Oversee physician services, including recruitment, credentialing, and performance management
- Ensure appropriate coverage and coordination of care for all patients/residents
- Mentor and support physicians and clinical staff through education, training, and professional development
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and other clinical consultants
- Develop, implement, and enforce clinical policies and procedures aligned with current standards of practice
- Ensure all attending physicians are informed of policies, procedures, and regulatory updates
- Maintain compliance with accreditation bodies and legal/regulatory standards
- Partner with executive leadership to align clinical initiatives with organizational strategy
- Collaborate with facility leadership and operational teams to enhance care delivery and patient outcomes
- Serve as a liaison with external healthcare systems and partners as needed
- Lead clinician education and in-service training programs
- Serve as a subject matter expert in geriatric medicine and chronic care management
- Support staff development by identifying and providing access to educational resources
- Participate in administrative and clinical leadership meetings
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient, staff, and organizational information
- Foster a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and accountability
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) required
- Board Eligible or Board Certified required; Board Certification preferred
- Formal training or demonstrated expertise in Geriatric Medicine strongly preferred
- AMDA Certified Medical Director (CMD) certification strongly preferred
- Minimum 10 years of clinical experience in medicine
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in hospital, long-term care, or healthcare administration
- Experience in long-term care or post-acute settings required
- Leadership Proven ability to lead clinical teams and drive organizational outcomes
- Clinical Expertise Deep knowledge of geriatric and chronic care management best practices
- Problem Solving Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- Communication Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills
- Regulatory Knowledge Strong understanding of Joint Commission and healthcare compliance standards
