ABOUT ESPERANZA ACADEMY

Esperanza means hope. Esperanza Academy Charter School (EACS), located in the Hunting Park section of North Philadelphia, is dedicated to serving the students within its community. We believe education can be a vehicle for social and economic advancement, especially in historically underserved communities. This core belief drives our relentless pursuit to become the best educational option for all students in the Philadelphia area.

Our proven track record of academic success with historically underserved students sets us apart. The Academy has 11th-grade test scores above the city of Philadelphia average and value-added math and reading proficiency growth is among the highest in Pennsylvania. Students graduate at a rate exceeding 90% and drop out at only 1%. For 9 out of 11 years, the Academy has been awarded a silver or bronze medal rating in the US News ranking of Best High Schools in the country.

In the fall of 2025, we opened a brand-new elementary school building, marking the completion of our expansion to a full K-12 program serving over 2,200 students. This growth will make Esperanza Academy the second-largest single charter school in Philadelphia, reinforcing our commitment to delivering high-quality education to even more students in our city.

THE OPPORTUNITY

At Esperanza Academy Charter School (EACS), we are deeply committed to ensuring that all students, including English Learners (ELs), receive the support they need to thrive academically and beyond. We seek an English Language Development (ELD) Coordinator to oversee and strengthen our English Language Development program, ensuring equitable access to high-quality education for all multilingual learners.

As an ELD Coordinator, you will lead the implementation of research-based instructional strategies for ELs, provide professional development to staff, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to English Learners. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced ESL or bilingual education professional who is passionate about linguistic equity and academic success for multilingual learners.

This full-time position for the 2026-2027 school year offers a unique chance to join a mission-driven school community dedicated to empowering students through language, culture, and rigorous instruction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all Title III and Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) regulations regarding the identification, placement, and instruction of English Learners (ELs).
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of English Language Development (ELD) programs and Language Instruction Educational Programs (LIEPs) across grade levels.
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support the integration of language acquisition strategies into content-area instruction.
  • Facilitate WIDA ACCESS testing and the use of data-driven instructional planning to monitor student progress and adjust supports as needed.
  • Provide professional development and coaching for general education teachers on the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), WIDA standards, and best practices for multilingual learners.
  • Support school teams in designing and implementing Individualized Language Plans (ILPs) for English Learners at various proficiency levels.
  • Foster family and community engagement by communicating with multilingual families about student progress, language acquisition programs, and available resources.
  • Act as a liaison between Esperanza Academy, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and other relevant agencies to stay current on ELD policies and best practices.

What you will bring:

  • A deep belief in Esperanza Academy’s mission and the transformative power of learning.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in TESOL, Bilingual Education, Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Certification: PA ESL Program Specialist Certification, along with a valid PA Teacher Certification, is required before the start date.
  • At least 3 years of experience in ELD instruction, bilingual education, or ESL program coordination, preferably in an urban school setting.
  • Strong knowledge of WIDA standards, second-language acquisition theories, and culturally responsive teaching.
  • Experience collaborating with teachers to support ELs across content areas.
  • Exceptional communication and advocacy skills for working with multilingual families and students.
  • Current FBI, PA Criminal, and Child Abuse background checks (conducted within the last 12 months).
  • Spanish fluency is preferred but not required.
