Job Summary
The Kennel Technician is responsible for providing a healthy, safe, clean and pleasant environment and facilities for the animal and the public. Technicians are responsible for treating all animals humanely and compassionately at all times, regardless of the situation and circumstances. Through their work with the animals in our care, Technicians learn about the individual animals, use that knowledge to make the best matches for potential adopters visiting the facility, and report updates or changes in behavior to maintain the physical and mental health of the animals they are tasked to care for.
The Technician performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to, disinfecting and general cleaning of animals and housing, maintaining the grounds and facility, performing intake and behavioral assessments, receiving animals and preparing their kennel for stay, providing excellent customer service to clients, performing adoption meet and greets interacting with and enriching animals in care, assisting with loading and unloading of supplies, attending offsite adoption events and other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Duties
- Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, grooming, and exercising.
- Maintain cleanliness of the kennel facilities by cleaning and sanitizing kennels, play areas, and equipment.
- Monitor animal behavior and health, reporting any concerns to the veterinary staff or management.
- Assist with administering medications as directed by veterinary staff.
- Handle dogs of various temperaments and sizes safely and effectively.
- Ensure that all animals receive adequate socialization and exercise throughout the day.
- Provide excellent customer service by communicating with pet owners about their pets’ needs and behaviors.
- Assist in training new staff members on proper animal handling techniques and kennel procedures.

- Responsible for the humane care and treatment of animals in our care.
- Monitors all animals for signs of disease; reports any concerns immediately to management to counteract any spread of illness.
- Maintains accurate daily records to ensure that proper disease prevention and control methods are being followed.
- Reports maintenance problems, facility repairs, supply needs and inventory challenges to management.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of facility, grounds, storage units and vehicles.
- Uses care while using catchpole, nets, gloves, walkie-talkie radios, and other shelter equipment. Notifies management when equipment needs repair or replacement.
- Participates in staff meetings and trainings, actively shares ideas and suggestions for improvement.
- Participates in the euthanasia of animals, according to shelter policies.
- Performs adoption meets between potential adopters and available animals. Shares relevant information regarding the animal and the organization’s adoption process and policies.
- Attends offsite adoption events as assigned.
- Performs basic day to day animal care operations including crematorium and freezer.
- Perform Intake Exams including, but not limited to, taking photos, scanning for microchips, vaccinating, blood draws, deworming, injections, recording of vitals, body examination and behavior assessing.
- Provide enrichment and training to animals presenting as behaviorally challenged in the shelter.
- Records and notifies management of any behavioral and medical changes in animals.
- Performs duties required to ensure a positive public image of the facility including, but not limited to, landscaping, waste removal, and trash removal.
- Assists other departments as needed or directed.
