The Olympic Academy program teaches students with social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges. This position works directly with students who have challenging behaviors.

This position is 7.5 hours/day, 190 days/year.

Teacher Associate Job Description

Purpose Statement

The job of Teacher Associate- Olympic and Summit Academy is done for the purpose/s of student academic performance and intervening when problems are identified, with the goal of providing academic and behavioral support for students enrolled in the Olympic or Summit Academy. This includes providing direct learning support to students; providing referrals to school and community-based services; coordinating services provided by multiple agencies/organizations; providing ongoing feedback and encouragement; and assisting students in accomplishing the goals of their individualized education programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).

This job reports to Olympic or Summit Director, as assigned, or designee

Essential Functions

  • Acts as a member of a student's team for the purpose of maintaining consistency in implementation of behavior plan throughout the school day.
  • Adheres to comprehensive and specific behavior plans and systems when working with students with significant behaviors for the purpose of ensuring safety and consistency.
  • Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments as directed for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching their academic goals.
  • Attends planning meetings with teachers and staff for the purpose of maintaining consistency throughout the program.
  • Attends trainings and functions as assigned for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. director, coordinator, teachers, support staff, families, etc.) for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions, and planning curriculum and school improvement.
  • Collects data from a variety of sources for the purpose of assisting in behavior and academic planning.
  • Confers with teachers and/or parents as may be required for the purpose of providing input into the evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing/modifying students' objectives.
  • Demonstrates behavior techniques for the purpose of providing effective strategies to improve student success.
  • Facilitates school improvement activities with school administration, staff, etc. for the purpose of implementing successful school-wide systems of supports for behavior.
  • Maintains files and/or records for the purpose of ensuring compliance with relevant regulations/guidelines.
  • Prepares materials and keeps records related to a student's IEP for the purpose of assisting the teacher in maintaining IEP data.
  • Provides school-based curricular, instructional, and classroom-based assessment support, at the direction and supervision of the assigned teacher, for the purpose of resolving learning & behavior issues and/or implementing school improvement plans in conformance with established guidelines.
  • Researches a variety of topics (e.g. technology, strategies, best practices, assessment practices, school restructuring, etc.) for the purpose of keeping abreast of current trends, technology and tools related to educational improvement (i.e. OER).
  • Responds to inquiries (e.g. teachers, administrators, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or recommendations.
  • Supports classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of supporting students with challenging behaviors.
  • Transports materials and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.

Marginal Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the Olympic Academy program.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and strong written and verbal English skills.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working independently; working in a stressful environment; responding to an emergency situation/first aid; working as a team player; willing to learn new skills; lifting 100 pounds occasionally with assistance; establishing and maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues; willing to be trained in area of duty, de escalation and collaborative problem solving; inputting data and other information; following established policies and procedures; and ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 33% sitting, 33% walking, and 34% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience

Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.

Education (Minimum)

High school diploma or equivalent.

Equivalency

Hold a high school diploma or equivalent and

  • Have received a passing grade on the Education Testing Services' (ETS) ParaPro Assessment; OR
  • Have completed a registered apprenticeship program; OR
  • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an institution of higher education; OR
  • Hold and Associate of Arts degree of higher.

1 year of experience working an educational setting with students experiencing significant behavioral/social emotional challenges.

Required Testing

Completes a 40-hour training on behavior management, comprehensive evaluation, and assessment satisfactorily within 90 days of employment.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Valid Driver's License/Evidence of Insurability
  • Valid WA State Teaching Certificate Preferred

Continuing Educ. / Training

Experience working with students with challenging behaviors in a K-12 school system preferred.
