The Community Risk Reduction Coordinator promotes, coordinates and conducts activities which educate and inform the community and department members concerning community risk reduction and fire and life safety. The incumbent maintains effective working relationships with employees, community members, and others in support of assigned duties.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


Interacts with civic organizations, community leaders, and schools to determine community needs identified in the Community Risk Assessment (CRA); determines Community Risk Reduction educational priorities, goals, and objectives and develops related implementation strategies.


Compiles and interprets data for the Community Risk Assessment and prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and documentation of public education activities and maintains appropriate files.


Identifies, modifies, implements, evaluates, and prioritizes educational programs to address the needs of target audiences and fire districts; working with station officers to communicate and identify risks and needs to the public.


Prepares, selects, and/or creates appropriate materials and methods to reach selected audiences effectively, with priority on tools that have been tested and evaluated for effectiveness; prepares other instructional materials and training as necessary; prioritizes own work assignments, conducts research, and analyzes data related to inspections and community risk.


Evaluates the effectiveness of community risk reduction and fire and life safety classes in response to audience attendance, program evaluations, instruction methods, while ensuring the material is up-to-date and reflects current strategies in risk reduction.


Delivers educational programs and/or instructs Line personnel or other staff in delivering educational programs, reviews current publications and media for ideas and resources.


Publishes fire and life safety information through Public Safety's PIO; researches, plans, composes, and disseminates news items, articles, and stories as related to the department's public education program; responds to inquiries from the media and the general public through the PIO; conducts a variety of activities to develop and maintain public awareness of and support for education initiatives.


Plans and executes fire drills and advises property owners and/or managers of methods to improve life safety evacuation plans.


Supervises, trains, directs, evaluates and participate in the work assignments and activities of Community Risk Specialists and other assigned personnel.


Plans, supervises and participates in the development of professional and comprehensive lesson plans, instructor guides, participant handouts, PowerPoint presentations, class flyers, pamphlets, inspection forms and checklists to support community education and risk reduction training needs.


Manages the development and coordination of community education and risk reduction programs and training classes for county representatives, first responders, and community members, including diverse audiences of all ages, abilities, cultures and backgrounds.


Evaluates community education and risk reduction program needs and provide recommendations to achieve program goals and objectives.


Monitors, inputs, and manage all scheduled community education and risk reduction related activities on the Fire Departments tracking software.


Develops, updates, publishes and manages the community education and emergency preparedness content on the Department's website through the PIO and other content as directed.


Participates in the development and coordination of the Department's community education and risk reduction media campaigns and ongoing social media and public outreach efforts.


Develops, coordinates, implements, and promotes community risk reduction programs, services and events with other government agencies and community-based organizations as directed.


Serves as a Department resource to refer and connect community residents to a variety of health and wellness services, particularly high-risk, vulnerable and underserved populations.


Ensures the content of all Department community education and risk reduction publications and digital media products reflect current applicable laws, statistics, technologies and recognized industry standards and best practices.


Researches, analyzes, and synthesizes data and information to prepare written documents, reports and recommendations as directed.


Attends meetings, trainings and conferences as required.


Works irregular or protracted hours and responds promptly to call-backs

Communicates and coordinates with Fire Marshal to obtain needed CRR initiatives in the community.


Communicates and coordinates with other agencies on CRR opportunities

Participates in community events such as but not limited to festivals, parades, school functions, etc.


Conducts outreach programs such as but not limited to smoke detector canvases.


Perform other duties as assigned or required.


TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications Requirements:


Training and Experience:

Associate’s degree in fire science/technology, sociology, psychology, public education, or a closely related field; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to those listed above.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license from state of residence

CPR certification

Florida Firefighter I Certificate or the ability to obtain within 2 years of employment

Fire & Life Safety Specialist or the ability to obtain within 1 year of employment

Junior Fire Setter Program or the ability to obtain within 2 years of employment


Preferred Qualifications:

Fire Instructor

Three years of experience in fire prevention/community risk reduction

Experience in classroom instruction and curriculum development

Two years of experience as an instructor

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity, and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
