POSITION SUMMARY: Erikson adjunct faculty are part-time instructors in one of Erikson’s academic programs – Master of Social Work, Master of Early Childhood Education leading to Licensure, Master of Early Childhood Education Online, Master of Child Development, and certificate programs.  Teaching may include day, evening, as well as, asynchronous and synchronous online courses and seminars.  Adjunct instructors report to the Program Director of the academic program in which they teach.

This course examines how cognitive-linguistic skills develop in the context of relationships in the first five years of life with a focus on informing practice in early childhood intervention. Topics of study will include early cognitive development, symbol use, non-verbal communication, language development, forms of play, and the interplay between these domains and the foundational factors of regulation, safety, and attachment. Students will be supported in developing observational skills to notice, describe, and analyze outward representations of internal processes related to thinking, playing, and communicating in infancy, toddlerhood, and preschool. The ways in which race, culture, socioeconomics, and neurodiversity impact development will be examined throughout the course. In addition, this course will focus on intervention through the early years with an aim at using child-caregiver interactions as the primary vehicle for developmental change. The course primarily aims to prepare early childhood professionals to support families, educators, and the community in optimizing developmental outcomes for children with a focus on how children think and communicate.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Teaching

  1. Prepare and organize for class and engage with students in an online and/or on-campus format;
  2. Teach seminars and supervise internships/field placements, and supervise independent study projects as needed;
  3. Create a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation;  
  4. Consider individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities;
  5. Use a variety of assessment methods as applicable by academic discipline and specific course to allow students to demonstrate knowledge, practice and reflection;
  6. Evaluate teaching and assessment methods and use data to continually improve instructional strategies;
  7. Use a variety of instructional methods and technologies to enhance classroom and/or online instruction and achieve learning objectives and learning outcomes;
  8. Adhere to the course-specific learning outcomes as designated by the program and participate in course, program and Institute assessment and accreditation activities;  
  9. Maintain attendance records and inform Registration and Records regarding enrollment errors and administrative withdrawals in a timely manner;
  10. Discuss performance and provide constructive feedback, as well as, other relevant information to students throughout the semester; and
  11. Maintain up-to-date grades in Canvas and submit end of semester grades on time in my.erikson.edu.

Syllabus  

  1. Maintain up-to-date syllabi that clearly outline the course requirements, goals, objectives, instructional class resources and materials, and institutional policies;
  2. Submit required textbooks and digital copies of the syllabi to the library for each semester; and
  3. Provide a schedule of teaching and office hours.

Advising

  1. Review and grade capstone projects as needed;
  2. Advise students about program to assist them with making informed decisions leading to degree or certificate completion;
  3. Refer students to the appropriate academic support services available; and
  4. Help students develop professional habits for the field by reinforcing student technical standards;

Meetings/Professional Development

  1. Participate in adjunct faculty and staff meetings, and commencement exercises;
  2. Continue professional development and growth according to personal needs and certification requirements, including participation in EI-provided faculty development offered throughout the academic year;
  3. Maintain professional competence in the specific discipline or field of study and integrate this expertise into teaching and learning to support student learning and outcomes; 
  4. Complete all mandatory performance evaluation measures within specified time limits, e.g., Title IX; and
  5. Adhere to all institute policies and procedures related to academic programs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of a master’s degree in social work, psychology, child development, speech and language pathology, or a related field is required.  Qualified candidates will have demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and belonging.  Candidates who apply for the MSECE:EI Program position must have a strong background in infant mental health theory and practice principles, and have experience working in the field.
