Position Summary
The Associate Process Planner is responsible for interpreting customer specifications, drawings, and quality requirements to develop accurate process plans for electroplating and metal finishing operations. This role ensures jobs are set up for efficient production while maintaining compliance with industry standards, customer requirements, and internal quality systems. The Associate Process Planner also supports the Sales Department by providing technical input and cost estimates for new job quotations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Specification Interpretation
1. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and customer purchase orders.
2. Analyze industry specifications (e.g., ASTM, AMS, MIL) and customer-specific requirements to determine applicable processing steps.
3. Verify feasibility of meeting customer requirements using available equipment, chemistries, and processes.

4. Develop detailed job travelers, process sheets, or routing instructions for production departments.
5. Determine appropriate masking, racking, surface preparation, plating, and post-treatment steps.
6. Specify process parameters such as bath type, dwell time, temperature, and inspection criteria.
7. Collaborate with production supervisors to optimize workflows, minimize waste, and ensure on-time delivery.
  • Sales & Costing Support
8. Assist the Sales Department in preparing accurate quotations for new and repeat jobs.
9. Calculate estimated labor, material, processing, and inspection costs based on job requirements.
10. Recommend alternative processes or design changes to improve manufacturability and reduce cost.
  • Quality & Compliance
11. Ensure all planned processes comply with company quality management system and regulatory requirements.
12. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable industry standards.
13. Participate in process reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communication & Coordination
14. Serve as a liaison between Sales, Production, Quality, and Engineering departments.
15. Communicate process requirements clearly to production personnel.
16. Provide technical support for production issues related to process plans.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in metal finishing, electroplating, or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with interpreting engineering drawings and technical specifications.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Proficient in reading mechanical drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
  • Ability to analyze and interpret industry specifications such as MIL, AMS, and ASTM standards.
  • Basic understanding of electroplating, anodizing, passivation, and other finishing processes.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Suite; ERP/MRP system experience a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Primarily office-based with regular visits to production areas.
Exposure to a manufacturing environment with noise, chemicals, and moving equipment.
Ability to stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs when reviewing jobs on the shop floor.

  • Accuracy and completeness of process plans.
  • On-time completion of job routings and quotations.
  • Contribution to cost reduction and process improvement initiatives.
  • Internal customer satisfaction (Sales, Production, Quality).
