What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shift Supervisor - All shifts position at Erie Foods International, Inc.?
Purpose of Position: To supervise production employees and process lines manufacturing food ingredients including milk protein powders, milk protein crisps, agglomerated calcium carbonate, and other custom products.
Requirements:
- At least 5 years of prior experience in the food/beverage industry with some leadership capacity (e.g., supervisor, manager, foreman, trainer, etc.), or an Associate’s degree or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, or a Bachelor’s degree (preferred) in the field of business, management, supply chain, engineering, food science, or closely related fields
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with production workers, mainly verbally, and with company management, mainly in written form (e.g., electronic mail) in the English language.
- Proven leadership abilities with prior experiences that demonstrate the ability to achieve goals by leading others.
- General computer literacy including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Must be flexible to work weekends, rotating shifts, and overtime as necessary and sometimes with short notice.
- Some prior knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCPs), Quality Management Systems (QMS), and regulatory agencies (i.e., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA)) is preferred.

Responsibilities:
- Lead daily pre-shift meetings to communicate with production personnel on production line statuses, provide updates from other groups associated with production such as Quality Control and Safety, to field questions/concerns from shift employees, and to introduce new employees.
- Assign production workers to the required positions for each operational production line at the beginning of each shift and ensure that those assigned have been properly trained for the position or that they are working under close supervision of someone who has been fully trained.
- Oversee production line startups ensuring that shifts have necessary equipment, materials, packaging supplies, and proper manufacturing documents, and that necessary documentation (e.g., startup checklists) have been completed before commencing.
- Oversee lot to lot and product changeovers for multiple production lines ensuring that previous manufacturing documentation is fully collected and accounted for, and that the newly supplied documentation is accurate and that required documentation such as in-process checklists are completed immediately.
- Oversee planned and unplanned process line shutdowns and ensures shutdown checklists, when applicable, have been completed, and that necessary steps (e.g., cleaning) are in-progress to restart the process following company SOPs.
- Inspect equipment visually and verify equipment cleanliness using ATP swabs or other approved verifications prior to releasing production lines to start or to continue production as required by Quality Control.
- Direct production personnel when production lines are not producing through the assignment of continuous plant improvement tasks.
- Communicate with other Production Supervisors daily at the beginning/end of the shift, or when needed by phone or e-mail, on production line statuses, staffing concerns, updates from Quality Control, Maintenance, and Safety, and/or other pertinent information necessary for a successful shift.
- Consults with the Production Manager on shift planning, staffing and assignment of production personnel, and recommending changes to improve cost, ergonomics, production, etc to produce products safely and with consistent quality.
- Ensure that production personnel are trained to work in assigned positions and requests required training from the Trainer/Utility position or provides and documents training as required.
- Complete or ensure completion and verifies accuracy of all documentation associated with all production lines.
- Collaborate with other department, including Maintenance, Safety, Quality Control, and Warehouse, leaders to ensure compliance with OSHA, FDA, GMPs, HACCP, and all plant procedures and policies.
- Work closely with Quality Control staff and plant GMP Leads to support the identification, investigation, and resolution of food safety, quality, and compliance issues.
- Oversee sanitation and sanitary housekeeping practices in production areas and submit work orders requesting repairs as needed to help maintain the facility in an audit-ready condition.
- Ensure production personnel follow GMP, food safety, allergen control, sanitation, and quality requirements at all times.
- Complete a daily shift report documenting daily activities, production outputs, production line downtime, product quality concerns, employee attendance, employee staffed positions, and other key information, and submit the report to plant management.
- Fill out paperwork associated with internal movements of materials and supplies within the facility, and also document process deviations and product non-conformances.
- Monitor the safety of production workers, report unsafe work practices or working conditions to the safety manager, and notify the safety manager and complete all relevant injury report paperwork for any known / reported injury in accordance with company policies.
- Report and document employee attendance, vacations, disciplinary concerns, medical problems, and other personnel issues to Human Resources (HR).
- Maintains a positive and safe work environment and open communication with production personnel.
- Strictly adhere to all company policies pertaining to such issues as Safety Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, and Human Resource issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
