The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is creating a list for a full-time Deputy Sheriff with the Road Patrol Division. In addition, we are hiring part-time positions for the Erie County Courthouse.

Must be Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certified, and pass an extensive background investigation to include psychological, physical and Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA). The 2024-2026 collective bargaining agreement consists of a four-year step pay increase that tops at $38.05.

We are also accepting later transfers from other agencies that match base deputy rate with years of full-time experience.

Department Overview: The Sheriff’s Office consists of three divisions: the Patrol Division, comprised of Patrol Deputy Sheriff’s, Detectives, and Communications Officers. The Jail Division; and the Civil Division.

Area Information: Erie County covers 626 square miles. Erie County is conveniently located less than one hour from Cleveland and Toledo and within hours from Columbus, Detroit, Dayton, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Toronto. It is easily accessible via the Ohio Turnpike, State Route 2, State Route 4, or U.S. Route 250.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : Under general supervision, the Deputy-Road Patrol patrols an assigned area of the County and observes and maintains safety and security of property and citizens, enforces traffic laws, conducts investigations of accidents, crimes and complaints, prepares and reviews reports, serves warrants, aids citizens and performs other related duties specifically assigned by the Sheriff and/or designee.

WORKING CONDITIONS : The Deputy-Road Patrol will travel frequently within and outside the county and work irregular hours, expanded and rotating shifts for twenty-four (24) hour coverage.

*An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES : (The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this position.)

Patrol: 75%
*Enforce local and state laws.
*Patrol the county.
*Arrest criminal offenders.
*Respond to alarms, traffic accidents and emergency calls for police assistance.
*Direct traffic.
*Conduct accident investigations.
*Conduct sobriety tests.
*Response to citizen calls and complaints.

  • Assist citizens who are locked out of their cars and homes.
  • Provide citizens with information regarding their rights.
  • Assist with the care and custody of prisoners.Maintain and care for cruiser when in possession.*Operate equipment including:
  • Firearms, flares, handcuffs, night stick, etc.
  • Dusting fingerprints and drug/alcohol analysis kits
  • Measuring devices
  • Office equipment
  • Transport evidence, individuals and prisoners, as needed.
  • Investigations: 15%*Conduct criminal investigations within jurisdiction.*Interview involved parties.*Gather and secure evidence.*Prepare detailed reports of findings including:
  • Incident reports
  • Witness statements
  • Supplemental reports
  • Complaints
  • Case files

Court: 5%*Provide expert testimony.*Escort inmates.*Serve papers and warrants. Miscellaneous: 5%*Assume special assignments as needed i.e., firearms instructor.*Communicate and work with other patrol officers, law enforcement agencies, medical and legal personnel and other involved parties as needed.Attend meetings and serves on temporary committees as requested.Prepare and maintain records and reports.*Maintain and increase knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in- service training sessions.Perform additional duties and assignments as required.* Denotes an essential function of the job
