JOB SUMMARY The supervisor for the Shift Engineering team leads the team of engineers working in the control room with the system operators supporting the reliable operations of the power grid. JOB DUTIES Supervises and oversees the day-to-day activities and work schedule of the Shift Engineering staff. Provides on-the-job training and coaching to employees Provides technical support to operations staff, including Energy Management System (EMS) and advanced power system analysis applications Leads a team that acts as Subject Matter Experts for the ERCOT Guides and Protocols and the NERC Standards for Day-Ahead and Real-Time Operations Assists the manager in providing leadership, mentoring, focus, and a long term strategy for the operational development for the ERCOT Shift Engineering team Coordinates and interfaces with other ERCOT team members in System Operations Support, Network Modeling group, EMMS Production Support, Market Operations Support, and System Operations to develop procedures and maintenance guides to assure proper performance and quality solutions of ERCOT advanced network applications Supervise and provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to the Shift Engineering team, including performance appraisals and other first-line management responsibilities Establish data quality requirements for the network model and telemetry input to ERCOT advanced network applications Develop operational procedures and desktop guides to support control room operations and ensure NERC and protocol compliance, including logging engineering studies performed to assess grid vulnerabilities, develop mitigation plans to manage reliability risks, conducting real time assessments and monitoring system operating limit exceedances. Coordinate with the Network Model group to improve accuracy of the network model Verify, in conjunction with Network Model and IT personnel, that the Network Model is ready for use in the various operations applications whenever changes or updates to the model are made Develop, measure, track and improve performance of ERCOT advanced network applications Assure achievement of quality indicators (set by TAC or stakeholder approval standards) of the solution generated by the advanced network applications Assure solutions provided by the advanced network applications, meets ERCOT operational requirements. Leads team to meet operational requirements, including control room support, network modeling development, network application development, and intra-ERCOT coordination with Market Operations Support, System Planning, Registration, Client Services, Load Profiling, and IT EMMS Develop recommendations for software enhancement and improvement of operational study accuracy and advanced network applications Provide appropriate data to IT EMMS, System Planning, System Operations, and other ERCOT groups Provide application performance report and analysis Work with various ERCOT subcommittees, working groups, and task forces Represent ERCOT on NERC committees, subcommittees, working groups, and task forces as assigned EXPERIENCE Requires minimum 5 years job related work experience and 1 year in a leadership role preferred in excess of degree requirements. Minimum years of job related experience can include time in leadership roles. Through the program, an EDP Engineer receives one-on-one mentoring, specialized training, and exposure to the work performed by each of the engineering groups at ERCOT. The program allows engineers to develop the fundamental skills necessary to reach their full potential while gaining an understanding of the types of engineering work ERCOT has to offer. EDP management supports participants each step of the way as they progress through the program. Upon completion, graduates are placed as full-time engineers within one of ERCOT’s engineering groups. The GMS Development Program (GDP) is designed to provide entry-level and early career professionals with the skills necessary to become successful Power System and Computer Engineers. The program, which is based in ERCOT’s Grid and Market Solutions (GMS) Department, will provide experience in day-to-day work and instruction in the fundamentals of electric power systems engineering, grid and market applications, software programming, and IT service and operations management. The GDP offers one-on-one mentoring, training, field trips, and special assignments. These assignments allow GDP engineers to become knowledgeable and familiar with the various business areas at ERCOT. The GMS leadership team prepares GDP engineers for a future career at ERCOT in power systems and computer engineering. The System Operator Development Program (ODP) is intended to combine real-time daily operations in an exciting work setting to prepare participants with the vital skills necessary to be successful in such a critical position — providing 24x7x365 on-demand support to manage the flow of electric power to more than 26 million Texas customers.
