ABOUT EPIC
Founded September 11, 2001, Epic Theatre Ensemble is dedicated to creating bold theatrical work with and for diverse communities that promotes vital discourse and social change. Epic builds thoughtful citizenship in diverse communities throughout NYC by producing award- winning, socially-minded productions of plays about current ethical and civic issues, and connecting these plays and artists to under-resourced public schools via curriculum- integrated in-school and elective beyond-school programs.
Professionally, we’ve commissioned and developed over 45 new works of socially-minded theatre. Our after-school program Shakespeare REMIX, in which 25-50 self-selected students engage in a demanding 6-month process which culminates in an authentically-professional production of a newly conceived classical play, was the recipient of the National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award presented by First Lady Michelle Obama. An estimated 230,000 people have now seen a professional Epic production, one of our 36 REMIX productions, or one of our touring productions built by the Epic NEXT Youth Ensemble, including over 40,000 students and over 25,000 adult first-time theatre-goers. Over 24 years, Epic’s artist residency programs have reached over 40,000 public high school students, building new American audiences and Citizen-Artists of the future.
