Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer

Eoptic, Inc.
Rochester, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 8/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/30/2027

Would you like to be part of a team of technical experts building advanced imaging products for space, defense, and metrology? If so, we're looking for someone like you to join the Eoptic team!

Job Summary

At Eoptic, we design and manufacture advanced imaging products for space, defense, and industrial metrology — and we need a seasoned opto-mechanical leader to help us deliver them. We're currently seeking a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical design of our multi-modal prism cameras, zoom optics, imaging payloads, and high-end metrology systems — spanning the UV through LWIR spectrum — from concept through production. In this role, you will design precision opto-mechanical structures and mechanisms that hold demanding optical tolerances through launch, harsh field environments, and long operational lifetimes. Successful candidates combine deep analytical rigor with hands-on integration experience and are reliable in delivering mission-critical hardware. If this applies to you, we'd like to hear from you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead opto-mechanical design of imaging systems — prism camera engines, zoom lens assemblies, space imaging payloads, CUAS sensors, and precision metrology instruments — from concept through detailed design, build, and qualification.
  • Design precision optical mounts, structures, and mechanisms (lens barrels, prism and beamsplitter mounts, focus/zoom mechanisms, kinematic and flexure mounts) that maintain alignment over thermal, vibration, and shock environments.
  • Perform structural, thermal, and thermo-elastic analysis (hand calculations and FEA) and integrated STOP analysis in collaboration with optical designers to verify performance over environments.
  • Develop and manage tolerance budgets in partnership with optical and systems engineering; translate optical sensitivities into achievable mechanical tolerances and assembly processes.
  • Create detailed drawings with GD&T, select materials, adhesives, and finishes appropriate for space flight and high-reliability defense hardware.
  • Design alignment, assembly, and test fixturing, and support technicians on the floor during integration, alignment, and environmental test campaigns.
  • Support environmental qualification (TVAC, vibration, shock, thermal cycling), including test planning, fixture design, and post-test analysis.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and machine shops on precision fabrication; review first articles and disposition non-conformances.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help mature Eoptic's opto-mechanical design standards, processes, and documentation as we scale from prototype to production.

Qualifications Required

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field
  • 10 years of opto-mechanical design experience for space, defense, or high-precision metrology systems
  • Experience designing opto-mechanics for imaging systems operating across the UV to LWIR spectrum, including material and mounting considerations for both refractive and reflective optics in multiple wavebands
  • Demonstrated track record of designs that survived environmental qualification and performed on-orbit or in the field
  • Expertise in precision optical mounting techniques (bonded, clamped, kinematic, flexure-based) and athermal design
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent) and FEA (structural and thermal)
  • Strong command of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for precision assembly
  • Due to ITAR/export control requirements, applicants must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident)

Qualifications Preferred

  • Experience with integrated STOP (structural-thermal-optical performance) analysis workflows
  • Experience designing zoom or other moving-group optical mechanisms
  • Familiarity with space flight workmanship and design standards (NASA-STD-5001, GEVS, ECSS, or similar)
  • Experience with cryogenic or vacuum-compatible design, outgassing requirements, and space-rated materials selection
  • Experience taking precision hardware from prototype into repeatable production
