Color Scientist

Eoptic, Inc.
Rochester, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 8/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/20/2027

Would you like to be part of a team of technical experts building advanced imaging products for space, defense, and metrology? If so, we're looking for someone like you to join the Eoptic team!

JobSummary

We are looking for a Color Scientist to join our Industrial Metrology division, where we develop novel appearance measurement systems that quantify how complex materials are perceived across different viewing environments. The central challenge of this role is quantifying the subjective experience of viewing a sample—drawing together relevant principles from existing color, vision, and appearance models to build instrumentation that captures how color, texture, and gloss are actually perceived, including the cognitive and contextual effects that influence each. You will bridge the gap between physical measurement and human perception, translating established vision science into working measurement systems.

This is a hands-on research and development position for someone who is equally comfortable reading the latest literature, connecting principles across models, and writing the software to put them to work. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to push the state of the art in appearance measurement.

Job Responsibilities

  • Draw together relevant principles from existing color, vision, and appearance models to inform how we measure perceived color, texture, and gloss.
  • Help translate these principles into instrumentation and metrics that quantify the subjective experience of viewing a sample, accounting for cognitive and contextual effects.
  • Conduct in-depth research and literature reviews to stay current with the state of the art in color science, human vision, and appearance modeling.
  • Write MATLAB or Python software to prototype and test measurement approaches.
  • Design experiments—including perceptual studies with human observers—to validate that our measurements track how samples are actually perceived.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate perceptual insights into measurement systems.

Qualifications Required

  • Solid understanding of color science principles.
  • Strong foundation in human vision, perceptual modeling, and prediction.
  • Interest in and understanding of how cognitive and contextual factors influence the perception of appearance attributes such as color, texture, and gloss.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or Python.
  • Ability to conduct rigorous, independent research and critically evaluate scientific literature.
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art color and appearance models.

Qualifications Preferred

  • Experience designing and conducting psychophysics experiments.
  • Understanding of display and rendering pipelines.
  • Some experience with 3D rendering.
  • MS or PhD in vision science, color science, optics, imaging science, or a related field preferred. Recent graduates with some relevant work or research experience are strong candidates.
