Position Overview
The Staff Arborist plays a key supporting role in daily operations, focusing on accurate field data collection, inventory management, and preparation of tree inventory reports and impact analyses.
Working with senior arborists and our GIS team, you will help gather data required to meet oak tree and protected tree ordinances across Southern California. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in consulting, regulatory compliance, and urban forestry practices.
Key Responsibilities
Field Data Collection and Site Support
- Conduct tree inventories and health assessments for a variety of projects
- Measure trunk diameter (DBH), canopy driplines, tag trees, and take site photos
- Use GPS/GIS tools to map tree locations and record structural conditions
- Maintain and properly use field equipment
- Perform fieldwork in uneven terrain and varying weather conditions
- Follow company field, hardware, software, and data protocols
Data Management and Report Preparation
- Transcribe and organize field data accurately into the web-GIS database
- Prepare reports for senior review, including:
- Arborist Inventory Reports
- Impact Analyses
- Tree Protection Plans
- Oak Woodland Reports
- Oak Tree Mitigation Plans
- Cross-reference field data with architectural and civil plans
- Maintain organized project files, including logs, photos, and drafts
Construction Monitoring and Compliance
- Support construction monitoring and compliance reporting
- Assist with implementation of tree mitigation plans
- Coordinate with clients and contractors
Collaboration and Team Support
- Work with arborists and GIS staff on surveys, reports, and mapping
- Coordinate with project managers to meet timelines and budgets
- Collaborate with teams in biology, GIS, permitting, and compliance
- Interface with clients and regulatory agencies
- Participate in team meetings and municipal code updates
Qualifications and Requirements
Certifications and Education
- Degree in Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Environmental Science, Botany, or related field
- ISA Certified Arborist credential (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
Technical Skills
- 1–3 years of experience in tree care, forestry, or environmental fieldwork
- Strong plant identification skills, especially Southern California native species and oaks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
- Ability to learn GIS and mobile data collection tools
- Ability to read site plans or topographic maps (preferred)
- Valid California driver’s license
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds
