Forward Deployed Engineer

Entabeni Systems · Black Mountain, New Hampshire

The software and hardware that powers independent ski resorts.

About Entabeni

Entabeni (noun; Zulu: “the mountain”).

We build the software and hardware that powers independent ski resorts. Point of sale. Ticketing. RFID access control. Rentals. The full stack — from the database to the gate scanner.

We're the tech behind the Indy Pass and we work exclusively with independent operators. No waterparks. No trade shows. No VC chasing growth at all costs.

What makes us different:

  • 8 years. Zero layoffs. Stable company, stable growth.
  • We own our facility at Black Mountain, New Hampshire — in the White Mountains, minutes from world-class outdoor recreation.
  • We value in-person collaboration. This isn't a remote role with occasional meetups.
The Role

This isn't a typical software engineering job.

As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll be the bridge between our product and the ski resorts that depend on it. You'll write code, yes — but you'll also install hardware, debug a printer that jammed on the coldest day of the season, train operators on a new system, and bring back insights that shape what we build next.

You'll be mostly office-based at Black Mountain, New Hampshire, with travel to partner resorts when deployments, integrations, or on-site support require it.

What You'll Actually DoBuild & Ship Software
  • Write production code across our stack — heavy on React and React Native, backed by a Ruby on Rails Postgres API.
  • Write native modules (Java/Kotlin on Android) that bridge React Native to hardware — POS terminals, RFID scanners, receipt printers, card readers.
  • Design and maintain the backend APIs (REST GraphQL) those clients and devices depend on — you'll work down the stack, not just consume it.
  • Use AI tooling to move faster — and verify what it produces rather than trusting it blindly.
  • Debug problems that span the full stack, from a flaky network at a mountain base to a race condition in a native module or a slow query — writing tests, reviewing code, and keeping the bar high as you go.
Deploy & Integrate Systems
  • Install and configure our systems at ski resorts — hardware and software.
  • Integrate with existing resort infrastructure, often legacy systems with poor documentation.
  • Handle the messy reality of deploying technology in harsh mountain environments.
  • Train resort staff on our systems.
Own the Customer Relationship
  • Troubleshoot issues on-site and remotely.
  • Be the person resorts call when something isn't working.
  • Build relationships that make customers want to stay with us.
Close the Feedback Loop
  • See how our software performs in the field.
  • Bring back insights that actually change what we build.
  • Advocate for the customer in product decisions.
  • Spot problems before they become support tickets.
What We're Looking ForRequired
  • 3–5 years of software engineering experience — you've shipped real products.
  • Strong React and React Native — you've built and shipped real UIs and understand component state, rendering, and the mobile runtime.
  • Comfortable writing native modules — bridging React Native to platform code (Java/Kotlin on Android), especially to talk to hardware.
  • Demonstrated backend ability — you can design and debug APIs and relational schemas, not just call them. This is genuinely full-stack: a React component in the morning, a backend query in the afternoon.
  • Strong fundamentals in SQL and relational databases.
  • Experience with Git beyond commit and push, including rebasing, branching strategies, and submodules.
  • You write clean, testable, maintainable code.
  • You can communicate with non-technical people without condescension.
  • You're comfortable with ambiguity — you'll often be the only engineer on-site.
  • Willing to relocate to Black Mountain, New Hampshire.
Strongly Preferred
  • Hardware integration via native modules — printers, card readers, scanners, RFID, serial protocols.
  • Ruby on Rails and Postgres specifically, our backend.
  • Experience with payment processing, including EMV and PCI compliance considerations.
  • Experience with Electron or other desktop application frameworks.
Nice to Have
  • Android device deployment and management.
  • DevOps experience, including AWS, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience working directly with customers in a technical capacity.
  • Experience with RFID/NFC systems.
  • Background in hospitality, ski industry, or POS systems.
  • You ski or snowboard, or want to learn.
What We're Not Looking For
  • Someone who only wants to write code and never talk to users.
  • Someone who thinks “that's not my job” when hardware needs to be installed.
  • Someone who needs perfect requirements before they can start.
  • Someone who's uncomfortable traveling or working in challenging environments.
Why This Role Exists

Most software companies build products and throw them over the wall to support teams. We don't have that luxury. Our customers are ski resorts running our software in -20°F weather, with seasonal staff, unreliable internet, and thousands of guests who just want to get on the lift.

We need engineers who can handle that reality. Who can write great code and explain to a lift operator why the scanner isn't reading passes. Who can debug a production issue and install a new POS terminal. Who see customer problems as interesting puzzles, not interruptions.

If that sounds like you, let's talk.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Healthcare covered.
How to Apply
