Job Title : Safety & Security Coordinator

Industry : Marine Terminals, Cargo Handling, Stevedoring, Warehousing, & Auto Processing

Location : Jacksonville, FL / Savannah, GA

Reporting Relationship : The Safety Director/Facility Security Officer.

About The Position

The Safety/Security Coordinator supports and promotes a culture of safety across port terminal and warehouse operations. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard, Maritime Safety Regulations, U.S. Customs, EPA, and Florida-specific safety laws. Responsibilities include conducting inspections, facilitating training, assisting with terminal security compliance, investigating incidents, and ensuring that all employees, contractors, and visitors follow company and regulatory safety/security procedures. Expectation is that you will devote your full business time, attention, and best efforts to the performance of your duties and the company’s interests. Some travel between other maritime terminals located in Jacksonville and/or conferences will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety/Security Program Compliance & Implementation
  • Enforce compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1917, OSHA 29 CFR 1918, and applicable USCG 33 CFR 105/126, EPA, Florida Department of Environment, & Florida Department of Transportation safety/security requirements.
  • Applicable U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requirements related to cargo handling, CTPAT participation, and secure movements of import/export cargoes.
  • Assist the FSO with implementing and maintaining the approved Facility Security Plan, access control, TWIC verifications, escorting procedures, designation and enforcement of secure/restricted areas, and cargo security measures.
  • Coordinate with USCG, CBP, and other federal, state, and local agencies as needed regarding facility inspections, drills, exercises, and security incidents.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific safety/security procedures for vessel loading/unloading, cargo handling, heavy equipment operation, stevedoring, warehouse operations and storage, auto logistics processing, and rail car loading/unloading operations.
  • Coordinate compliance with TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) security protocols, environmental protection, stormwater, and hazardous materials.
  • Maintain awareness of Florida environmental hazards such as extreme heat, high humidity, hurricanes, and severe storms; update emergency action plans accordingly.
  • Coordinate safety meetings, toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and drills or exercises.
  • Training & Safety Education
  • Conduct new-hire safety/security orientations, emphasizing port and warehouse hazards.
  • Facilitate regular toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and emergency drills.
  • Provide specialized training for PPE usage, hazard communication (HazCom), confined space entry, lockout/tagout procedures, powered industrial trucks operations, heat stress, fall protection, vessel familiarization, respiratory use, security procedures, and other regulatory or company-required training courses.
  • Track training certifications in the company’s EHS database, EHS Insight.
  • Inspections & Hazard Control
  • Perform and document daily, weekly, monthly, and/or annual inspections of terminals, vessels, warehouses, docks, auto processing yards, and cargo storage areas.
  • Identify and address hazards, including trip/fall risks, improper cargo securing, equipment malfunctions, chemical storage violations, environmental spill risks, and security implementation requirements.
  • Inspect and assist in maintaining safety/security equipment such as fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash stations, AEDs, first aid cabinets, radios, cameras, and spill response kits.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, including those from USCG, CBP, OSHA, EPA, insurance, and corporate safety.
  • Incident Response & Investigation
  • Respond to and assist in workplace accidents, injuries, near-misses, hazardous material spills, and security incidents in compliance with OSHA and USCG reporting requirements. Document and preserve evidence from incident scenes.
  • Ensure proper notification and reporting to internal and external parties.
  • Lead/assist incident investigations using 5 whys; identify root causes and corrective/preventive actions CAPAs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely injury/illness logs per OSHA 300/301 requirements, and Florida and US Longshore and Harbor Workers, Workers’ Compensation laws.
  • Reporting & Recordkeeping
  • Prepare and distribute safety/security performance reports for management and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Support facility security as an assistant FSO in implementing required USCG security regulations.
  • Maintain documentation of safety meetings, training, inspections, incident investigations, required regulatory plans/manuals/SOPs, security incidents, and environmental incidents as required.
  • Support audit preparation for OSHA, USCG, CBP, other regulatory agencies, and insurance inspections.
  • Qualifications and Expectations (Required/Preferred)
  • Required - Ability to maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Preferred - OSHA 30-hour Maritime or General Industry certification.
  • Preferred - First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Preferred - Facility Security Officer certification or alternate FSO training requirements.
  • Preferred - CTPAT/FTZ understanding.

Experience

  • 2 or more years of prior experience in maritime terminals, stevedoring, warehouse operations, auto processing, rail movements, and/or related industrial environments. (Preferred)
  • Prior experience in safety, security, and/or regulatory compliance roles.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA maritime and warehouse safety standards, USCG regulations, and Florida state safety requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply company policies, FSP requirements, and regulatory standards in day-to-day operations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with diverse workgroups.
  • Comfortable in delivering training materials and speaking in front of small and large groups.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS/safety tracking and reporting software.
  • Strong observation skills and ability to recognize hazards quickly and implement corrective actions.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, 24/7 port environment.

Work Schedule & Availability

  • Ability to work varying schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays to support vessel/warehouse/terminal operations, special projects, and incidents.
  • Availability for on-call support during emergencies, severe weather events, and/or security incidents.
  • Participation in periodic training, drills, exercises, and committee meetings.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Ability to wear and maintain required PPE: Safety-toe boots/shoes, hi-visibility safety clothing, gloves, hardhat, respiratory protection, hearing protection, etc.
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk long distances, climb stairs/ladders, and work on uneven/slippery surfaces on the terminal and vessels.
  • Ability to frequently use hands and arms to handle materials, operate radios, grab, handle, feel, and reach.
  • Ability to occasionally sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, or crawl for inspecting equipment, cargo, or structures.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, occasionally.
  • Vision abilities, whether natural or corrective, include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Working indoors and outdoors, with occasionally excessive heat or cold, extreme weather conditions, excessive humidity or dampness, chilling, and noisy environments with moving machinery.

Monday – Friday, Nights, Weekends, Holidays, and extended schedules of 6 to 7 consecutive days during operations as needed.
