What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Teacher (PreK-12) (2026-2027) position at English Valleys Community School District?
English Valleys CSD is based out of North English, IA, which is located 15 minutes south of I-80 and approx. 30 miles west of Iowa City.
The ideal candidate would love kids and be willing to step in on a moments notice to keep the school day running smoothly.
A substitute teacher's job involves temporarily taking over a regular teacher's responsibilities, including teaching lessons, maintaining classroom management, and ensuring student safety. They are responsible for implementing lesson plans, assessing student work, and communicating with school staff and parents when necessary.
Key Responsibilities of a Substitute Teacher:
Following Lesson Plans: Substitute teachers are expected to follow the lesson plans provided by the regular teacher, ensuring continuity in student learning.
Classroom Management: Maintaining a positive and orderly learning environment is crucial, including keeping students engaged and on task.
Student Supervision: Substitute teachers are responsible for supervising students during class time, in hallways, and potentially on the playground or in the cafeteria.
Communication: Communicating with school staff and parents about student behavior and performance is sometimes required.
Other Duties: Depending on the situation, substitute teachers may also be assigned other tasks, such as assisting with non-classroom duties.
Long-Term Substitutions: In some cases, substitute teachers may be assigned for extended periods, requiring them to develop their own lesson plans and adapt to different teaching styles and subjects as well as grade assignments, monitor student progress, and provide feedback to the regular teacher.
Skills and Qualifications:
Educational background: We require a Substitute Teacher Authorization or Teaching License.
Communication skills: Effective communication with students, parents, and school staff is essential.
Classroom management skills: The ability to maintain a positive and orderly classroom environment is crucial.
