Role Description The Engineer in Training will support civil and structural engineering projects with a focus on inspection, assessment, and documentation of infrastructure for public agencies. In this full-time hybrid role based in Grand Island, NE, the team member will split time between on-site work and approved work-from-home tasks. Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting with field inspections, collecting and interpreting structural data, preparing reports and drawings, and supporting senior engineers with design calculations and project coordination. The Engineer in Training will help ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards, maintain accurate records, and contribute to project schedules and quality control. The role also involves collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, participating in safety practices, and continuing professional development toward licensure.
Qualifications
- Foundational civil/structural engineering knowledge, including familiarity with structural analysis, materials behavior, and basic design principles.
- Proficiency with engineering software and tools (e.g., CAD drafting, spreadsheets for calculations, and common inspection or reporting tools).
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills for preparing inspection reports, calculations, and project communications.
- Effective analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities to evaluate structural conditions and propose sound recommendations.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate on-site and remotely with engineers, technicians, and clients.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or eligibility to obtain it is preferred.
- Ability to perform field work, including travel to project sites, working in outdoor environments, and adhering to safety protocols.
- High level of organization, attention to detail, and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
- Interest in structural inspection and public infrastructure projects; prior internship or co-op experience in engineering is a plus.
