What are the responsibilities and job description for the Metallurgist position at Engine Power Components?
- Purpose:
The Metallurgical Lab Technician is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of heat-treating processes for new and existing products. This role is highly hands-on, requiring active involvement on the production floor as well as in the metallurgical lab. The position ensures product quality, process consistency, and supports troubleshooting and process optimization efforts. This role will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency while driving continuous improvement
- Essential Duties:
- Ensure the quality of all products meet customer specifications.
- Order supplies for various metal testing in the lab and on the floor.
- Train appropriate process stakeholders in new or improved process requirements. Ensure trainee capability, by performing audits on all shifts.
- Ensure incoming material meets certification standards.
- Perform measurement tasks associated with the APQP and PPAP processes, including capability studies and ISIR layouts.
- Participate in internal audit and calibration system processes to ensure integrity of process standards.
- Perform metallurgical lab inspections. This includes microscopic, macroscopic, examinations, hardness, mag, and etch conformance.
- Participate in appropriate Root Cause/Corrective Actions. Assist in ensuring timely completion.
- Comply with EPC policy, procedure and practice, and participate in safety improvements
- Supplier communication with regards to incoming material. Handle supplier non-conformance issues. For example: Foundry scrap monthly returns.
- Mixing and filling of chemicals, and cleaning and recharging Mag booths
- Cut cross section of material and perform measurements.
- Ensure gage, hardness, black light, and oven, testing certification
- Daily review of cameras to ensure operator compliance, and Millipore checks.
- Other duties as assigned
- Work Environment:
- Successful completion of EPC drug screen.
- Office/Plant environment. Limited lifting, stooping, bending, reaching or grasping.
- Lift at least 10 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds on occasion.
- Suggested Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Minimum of 3-4 year in a related Engineering degree program (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical, Metallurgical, etc) Preferred
- 0-5 years of prior experience in the essential duties, listed above.
- MPI Level 2 Certification, preferred.
- Formal Metallurgic training in steel and cast iron, preferred.
- Working knowledge of measurement, programmable and mechanical measuring tools, common quality and continual improvement practices, statistical techniques. Specific knowledge of hardness, mag, and etch equipment preferred.
- Blueprint reading skills and working knowledge of metrology standards.
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent software skills, including MS Office Products
