Mid-Level DevOps Engineer

Summary:

Seeking a DevOps Engineer to research, develop, and maintain automation processes and tools supporting the integration and deployment of complex Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity and simulation software systems. The role involves managing multiple software baselines with customized virtual machine (VM) and container configurations, as well as supporting development, testing, and deployment environments. The position requires balancing hybrid cloud operations between private infrastructure and public cloud platforms, while ensuring stability, security, and scalability across the environment.

Essential Functions:

• Design, implement, and maintain automated deployment and monitoring scripts to support a wide range of DevOps activities.
• Research and maintain Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, tools, and workflows.
• Automate application deployments, manage containerized and virtualized resources, and configure virtual and physical networks.
• Create and maintain scripts across multiple programming and scripting languages under configuration management.
• Analyze real-world technical challenges and deliver solutions aligned with DoD DevOps guidance, cybersecurity standards, and industry best practices.
• Ensure the stability, accessibility, and proper configuration of all assigned systems and environments.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Implement and manage automated CI/CD pipelines leveraging enterprise container and virtualization platforms.
• Monitor and maintain virtual machines, containers, and related applications across hybrid environments.
• Collaborate with software, integration, and test engineers to optimize development workflows.
• Diagnose and resolve complex system issues using enterprise monitoring and ticketing tools.
• Contribute to documentation, dashboards, and presentations summarizing performance metrics and process improvements.
• Support knowledge-sharing initiatives through training and maintaining internal documentation libraries.

Required Skills:

• Strong understanding of modern DevOps tools, automation frameworks, and development methodologies.
• Proficiency in scripting for automation, administration, data collection, and reporting (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Experience with configuration management, version control, and backup strategies for automation artifacts.
• Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects.
• Capable of leading small-scale technology research or implementation initiatives.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly.
• Experience presenting system performance data using tools such as PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, Jira, and Confluence.
• Proven problem-solving ability across diverse software and hardware environments.
• Strong collaboration skills in a team-based engineering environment.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with tools such as Jenkins Pipelines, Puppet, JFrog Artifactory, Git, Harbor, and Kustomize.
• Familiarity with private and hybrid cloud environments, including VMware vCenter/ESXi, Kubernetes, Docker, and OpenShift.
• Experience using Ansible to automate provisioning and teardown of virtual machines and network assets.
• Ability to design and maintain self-service automation portals for DevOps or IT operations.
• Exposure to Agile software development methodologies and workflows.

Education & Experience:

• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of three years of relevant experience in DevOps or system automation.
• CompTIA Security certification required within six months of hire.
• Additional professional certifications (e.g., AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, VMware, or related DevOps credentials) are a strong plus.
