Position Summary

The DNA Analyst I is an entry-level laboratory professional responsible for conducting sample preparation, DNA extraction, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of relationship and forensic casework in a high-volume, accredited laboratory environment in accordance with ISO 17025:2017 and AABB Relationship Testing Standards. The Analyst ensures that all laboratory work is performed with precision, attention to detail, and strict adherence to validated methods, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and the laboratory’s Quality System.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day laboratory activities including: sample receipt, documentation, and chain of custody management; sample preparation, DNA isolation, quantification, amplification, and capillary electrophoresis; raw data generation, interpretation, and reporting of DNA results.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 17025, AABB, and laboratory SOPs at all times.
  • Apply proper laboratory techniques to ensure accurate and reproducible results, including maintaining contamination control and following safety protocols.
  • Document all casework, analytical steps, instrument runs, and quality control checks in accordance with Quality System requirements.
  • Assist the Laboratory Supervisor with routine analytical preparation and casework review as needed.
  • Participate in internal and external proficiency tests and competency assessments to maintain active qualification as a DNA Analyst.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of laboratory SOPs and workflows.
  • Maintain the integrity, calibration, and readiness of laboratory instrumentation, reagents, and consumables.
  • Protect the confidentiality, integrity, and security of all samples, records, and client data.
  • Maintain effective communication with colleagues, supervisors, and other departments to support laboratory and Quality System objectives.

Education and Work Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Forensic Science, or a closely related field (required).
  • Coursework in genetics, molecular biology, statistics, and population genetics strongly preferred.
  • Prior laboratory experience (academic or professional) demonstrating competency in molecular biology techniques is desirable but not required.
  • Familiarity with Quality Systems, accreditation requirements, and documentation practices preferred.

Competency Requirements

  • Parentage Testing Statistics – Intermediate (training provided as required).
  • Parentage Testing Analysis – Intermediate (training provided as required).
  • Quality Systems and Quality Systems Management – Intermediate understanding and application.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform accurate, detail-oriented work in a regulated laboratory environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Physical and Professional Requirements

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform all essential job functions in compliance with federal, state, and local standards (ADA, FMLA, OSHA).
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods while performing laboratory tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in writing and verbally, including by telephone and email.

Pay: $40,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
